Time to Start Your Garden!

It’s time to get your hands dirty and start your outdoor garden. The safe frost date for our area is May 11th, so don’t hesitate to grab your plants from the local greenhouse or transplant your own babies to their permanent growing spot. Whether you are a novice gardener or a veteran horticulturist, you work towards for the same goal each year, to have a flourishing garden with a bountiful harvest. Many problems can occur in a garden that will impede you from achieve your goal. These hinderances include, critters, bugs, fungus, disease, weather, and even your own pets. So, let’s try to prevent these problems the best we can. Let’s start with the basics to give our plants the best opportunity to succeed. Here are some starter tips…

  • Pick the right location—ideally, a sunny site! Most vegetables need at least 6 hours of sun a day. Some crops such as lettuce and spinach, and other greens will grow well in your partially sunny spots, but sun-loving plants like tomatoes and peppers need as much light as possible.
  • Keep it close to home. A location near your house will make it easier for you to tend your plot regularly and will also make it convenient to run out and pick what you need for a meal.
  • Good soil is the key to a successful garden. Plants depend on the soil for nutrients, stability, and drainage. To grow your best garden, start with well-drained, sandy loam and add as much organic matter as possible. If you have impossibly rocky soil or solid clay, consider building some raised beds that you can fill with good soil. Growing vegetables in containers is another option.
  • Know when to water and how much to give. The best way to figure out when and how much water your plant needs is to do some research online. Different plants in different areas will have varying needs. Make sure you take your climate into consideration.

Now that you have your garden prepared and ready to go., let’s take a look at some tricks to keep your plants happy…

Attract Hummingbirds to Stop Aphids – Hang a hummingbird feeder above your plants that are being attacked by aphids. The hummingbirds will eat all the aphids before they move on to the nectar in the feeder.

Reuse Water – The next time you boil or steam vegetables or make pasta, don’t pour the water down the drain, use it to water your plants. It is often nutrient-rich and your plants will love it!

Stop Deer with Soap -The best known deer repellent is ordinary bar soap. Hang bars of soap either from a string or in a mesh bag, near the garden or along the fence. Deer do not like the scent of the soap and stay away. (Irish Spring is most commonly used.)

Repel Rabbits – Those “wascally wabbits” can be very damaging to a garden. It turns out they don’t like blood meal. Sprinkle it throughout your garden and it will not only repel critters, but it is a good fertilizer too.

Save Your Coffee Grounds for Your Garden – Coffee or tea grounds are an excellent addition to your gardening routine. You can use them indirectly in your compost, fertilizer, or mulch. Plus, they are a wonderful deterrent to add around your garden edge to keep critters away from your plants. This is one of the best garden hacks that is practically free!

Plastic Forks to Keep Animals Away – Place plastic forks with the handle in the dirt and the tines up. This will deter pests and even curious cats and dogs from tromping through your garden. They won’t want to maneuver around the pointed objects where your fruits, veggies, and flowers are.

Deter Birds with Bright Red Rocks – This hack is all about training birds to not go after your red fruits and vegetables. They will try to peck at the painted red rock, and the result is unpleasant, so they don’t do it again. If you are growing strawberries or tomatoes, this is a great choice to help save them from birds. (I do this with my strawberry garden, and it works like a charm!)
