Here is what’s going down during the week of 4/28/2022 – 5/4/2022

Hello May!

May (in Latin, Maius) was named for the Greek goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility.

You have all heard the saying “April showers bring May flowers”, right?  Well, we certainly got our share of shower in April, including, snow, hail, thunderstorms, wind, and a roller coaster ride of mild and cold temperatures. After a crazy April like this, I sure hope May brings us some warm, spring-like, consistent weather that will cover the earth with new life and guide us into the hot days of summer. May is the month of rebirth to all living things, and in turn, brings us a sense of optimism and joy. After a long grey winter, it is time for us celebrate life, hope for the future, and enjoy the last stretch of spring and all that it brings.

The month of May not only brings us the unofficial start to summer, but is also home to some reflective, fun, and even quirky holidays. Here are a few…

  • May Day (5/1) – May Day is a public holiday celebrated on May 1 in many different cultures around the world. It is a day of unity, togetherness, and rebirth; a day for everyone to come together and celebrate life as we know it! There isn’t a specific origin of the holiday, but rather several century-old springtime celebrations that have been condensed into one holiday over the years. Some of the May Day traditions include parties, sing-alongs, dancing around the maypole, and parades.
  • Star Wars Day (5/4) – Grab your lightsabers, put on your best Yoda voice, and greet your friends with “May the fourth be with you”. Maybe you invite some friends over to watch your favorite Star Wars movie? You can even whip up a batch of Star Wars themed goodies. Have fun with it, but make sure you don’t fall to the dark side.
  • Cinco de Mayo (5/5) – Translation: “Fifth of May” – A holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage. So, put on your sombrero and go out for some tacos, margaritas, and have a fiesta!
  • Mother’s Day (5/8) – A holiday honoring our mothers that takes place on the second Sunday in May. You can shower her with cards, gifts flowers, or even breakfast in bed, just make sure you show her how much she is loved.
  • National Apple Pie Day (5/13) – “As American as apple pie!” Well let’s celebrate it then! It will make for a yummy celebration.
  • Memorial Day (5/30) – A U.S. federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the military. It is tradition to raise your flags this day in remembrance.

Some other notable May events…

  • 5/3 – National Teacher Day
  • 5/6 – National Nurses Day
  • 5/7 – The Kentucky Derby
  • 5/21 – Armed Forces Day
  • 5/29 – Indianapolis 500
