Here is what’s going down during the week of 3/31/2022 – 4/6/2022

The Boyertown Area Historical Society:

It’s a treasure to have a group of people dedicated to preserving the past achievements, events, people, and even disasters that took place in a community. We are so lucky to have such a group in Boyertown by the name of “Boyertown Area Historical Society“.

If ever you want to know about your family’s past, or the history of an old building, or anything about Boyertown and the people who lived there, the first place you should check is the Historical Society’s Library. The library’s archives are available to the public and have tons of documents and information to help you with your quest. Did you graduate from Boyertown? The library holds every Boyertown senior yearbook, since the first one published in 1939.

The Historical Society also houses its own museum. There you can find all kinds of interesting artifact from Boyertown’s history. To name just a few, there is the wedding dress from the Boyer family, a casket/time capsule from the Boyertown Casket Co, a display about the Opera House fire with original items, and even the bear that was salvaged from the old Bonanza restaurant before it was torn down. (The museum is temporarily closed for renovations.)

There are many community events that are hosted by the Historical Society. This Sat & Sun you can unearth some treasures during the “Come Out Swingin’ Spring Fling 2022” annual metal detecting event. Attendees from all over the nation come out for their chance to dig up some history. Have you ever wanted to try metal detecting? Kids and adults can come out for the opportunity try it themselves and learn the tricks of the trade. Also, the Historical Society is selling Funny Cakes as a fundraiser from now until April 14th. Some other events to look forward to throughout the year are “Tractors in the Park”, “Belsnickle” craft show, the New Years “Bear Drop”, along with many special exhibitions.

The Boyertown Area Historical Society is located at 43 S Chestnut St, Boyertown, and the building itself has interesting history.

George Unger had this building constructed as his home in 1903. After raising his family at this house, he decided to sell it after his wife Lagora passed away.  In the early 1920’s, the newly formed parish of St. Columbkill’s bought the dwelling from George Unger to use as a church and rectory.

In 1951, a completely new facade was added to the building because of the growing parish.  By 1969, the parish was moved to its present location on Indian Springs Road.

In 1974, the Boyertown Area Historical Society purchased the building. The first regular membership meeting was held on July 11, 1974, beginning a new era in this stately turn of the century building, and as they say, “The rest is history”

now and then
