The Wordle Phenomenon

Have you been hearing chatter about the game Wordle…um, pretty much everywhere? Maybe you saw the weird cryptic green, yellow and gray Wordle boxes being posted on social media? Have you wondered what this Wordle thing is, but haven’t looked into it yet? Well let’s take a dive in and find out!

WORDLE

Wordle is a free online daily word game that has amassed millions of players since its creation just a few months ago. The appeal is in its simplicity. Each Day at midnight a new secret five letter word is chosen, and you try to guess it. You get six chances to get it right. When you enter the word you think it might be, each letter will turn green, yellow, or grey. If it turns green, the letter is correct and in the right place. Yellow means it’s the right letter, but in the wrong place. Grey means that letter is not in the secret word at all. That’s it! So simple, but so much fun. The sense of accomplishment you feel if you figure out the word in six tries is grand, but if you get it before the sixth try, well that makes you feel fantabulous!

The game was started by Josh Wardle, a software engineer from Brooklyn, New York. He originally created it for his partner to play. When constructing the original idea, he found that there are about 12,000 five letter words in the English language. Then he narrowed it down to about 2,500 words that people have actually heard of. This means the game could last for a good many years before ever repeating a word. In October of 2021 Mr. Wardle decided to release his game to the public. On November 1st only 90 people had played it. Within two months that number had grown to 300,000, and continued to snowball from there.

With the popularity of the game skyrocketing, and players now in the millions, The New York Times offered to purchase the widely popular word puzzle from Mr. Wardle for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. With the purchase now complete, the NY Times has assured fans that Wordle will be free to play for new and existing players, and no changes will be made to its gameplay.

With the success of anything, imitation is bound to follow, and Wordle is no exception. There are now many “spinoff” games that follow the same idea, but with a twist. Here are a few.

  • Worldle – A geography-based version.
  • Primel – This uses numbers instead of letters.
  • Absurdle – This game is actively trying to avoid giving you the answer.
  • Lewdle – A game using rude and obscene words.

It might be fun trying some of the other versions, but the original always seems to be the most fun.

Now that you know a little more about this people pleasing puzzle, why don’t you give it a try. It only takes a few minutes of your time, and it always leaves you wanting more. Go ahead. Test your S K I L L.
