2022 Winter Olympics and the Pennsylvania Olympians

Every four years the best athletes from around the world converge to compete for their country and for their dreams. They strive to stand atop a podium with their country’s flag above all others, as they contemplate their struggles, devotion, and dedication, while proudly listening to the anthem of their homeland. This is the Olympics. On Friday, February 4th the twenty-fourth Winter Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China. You can watch the opening ceremony live at 6:30am on Friday morning or the prime time replay at 8pm on NBC or streaming on Peacock.

I look forward to the Olympics every time they come around. The unscripted victories and losses, the courage and stamina of athletes and their backstories, learning about the culture of the hosting city, are some of the things I love about the Olympic Games.

The old Saturday afternoon program, “Wide World of Sports”, said it best in their weekly show opener…“Spanning the globe, to bring you the constant variety of sport. The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat. The human drama of athletic competition.”

For the next two weeks I will try to watch as much of the Winter Olympics as possible. I also hope my children will enjoy watching the games too. I would like them to be encouraged to work hard and shoot for the stars to achieve any dream that drive them. That is what I believe the essence of the Olympic Games are.

While you are watching the games, keep an eye out for these three Olympic competitors who call Pennsylvania their home…

Summer Britcher – Glen Rock, Pennsylvania – Luge

Britcher returns for her third Olympics, having competed in luge in the 2014 and 2018 games. The 27-year-old was won more world cup singles races than anyone in U.S. history. She helped Team USA win bronze in the 2020 World Championships as part of the relay team. She has also previously won gold in the 2012 Youth Olympics as a member of the U.S. relay team.

Andrew Heo – Warrington, Pennsylvania – Speedskating in Short Track

Heo is considered a rising star in the sport of speedskating. He qualified for his first Olympics this year at the age of only 20. He earned a bronze medal in the 2021 World Championships as part of the 5000m relay team. In the Olympic qualifiers, Heo ranked third among all Americans at all three distances, even finishing second in the 1500m.

Brian O’Neill – Yardley, Pennsylvania – Men’s Ice Hockey

O’Neill is back for his second trip to the Winter Olympics. In fact, he’s the only returning member of the Team USA men’s ice hockey team. The 32-year-old played his collegiate hockey at Yale University. In 2014-15, O’Neill won the most valuable player award in the AHL, helping lead the Manchester Monarchs to win the Calder Cup. Most recently, he has played in the KHL since 2018, registering 202 points (53 goals, 149 assists) in 212 games.
