WHAT TO DO IN WINTER??

The winter months can get very mundane if you are not an avid skier or snowboarder. Being stuck in the house with nothing to do is sure to bring on cabin fever (especially when you are living in a pandemic). To shake off those winter blues, you must keep the mind, body, and soul active. Try something you haven’t done before or figure out a way to gather with friends or do something you enjoy. These things don’t seem to come as easy in winter as they do in the summer. So, let’s take a look at the items below and see if something tickles your fancy. If so, take the extra step to do it and keep things fresh and fun, even when it’s cold and dreary outside.

Snow Tubing – Take sledding to the next level! Grab the whole family for a day on the ski slopes, even if you can’t ski. Snow tubing takes no skill, and you can say goodbye to the grueling walk back up the hill, like you have to endure when your sledding. Check out Bear Creek Mountain’s snow tubing hill. It is guaranteed to be a blast!

Go Bowling – Yes, you can go bowling anytime of the year, but bowling during the winter season is a great way to escape the chilly weather outside. Try glow bowling at Limerick Bowl or Jay Lanes! Turn off the lights, turn up the disco lights, crank up the music, and go for that strike!

Binge Watch a TV Series – How about getting in your comfy jammies and spending chill time binge watching a TV series you’ve been meaning to watch? This is an easy way to spend time together with the kids, as a couple, or even solo. From comedy to suspense, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ has a billion options to keep you watching back-to-back episodes!

Attend a Hockey Game – Spend an afternoon surrounded by screaming fans, watching a high action hockey game. You can take a trip to Philly to see the NHL Philadelphia Flyers. You can even make a day of it by touring the historic sites while you’re there. If you want to stay closer to home, you can catch some action with the Reading Royals at the Santander Center in Reading.

Take a Cooking Class – Get a firsthand cooking experience while in a fun and interactive group setting. There’s nothing like learning tricks and techniques from the experts and creating a delicious dish. Your loved ones will be happy to reap the benefits of your education.

Have a Bonfire – Who doesn’t love sitting next to a warm fire pit when it’s cold outside? Call your friends and gather your family for an exciting outdoor bonfire experience. You can sit around the flames, tell stories, and enjoy your favorite hot food & warm drinks, and enjoy a starry night.

Bake a Pie or Cookies from Scratch – There’s an art to making the best homemade pie or making the perfect ooey gooey cookies. What a delicious way to warm up a cold winter’s day. Have your kids or a friends join in for a fun afternoon with a sweet ending.

Go Ice Skating – Frozen ponds or lakes can provide a scenic outdoor experience, while taking in the fresh crisp air, as you glide along the ice. Make sure the ice is at least four inches thick before you walk out on it. If you can’t find a frozen pond or lake, you can find local outdoor ice-skating rinks at Green Lane Park and Spring Mountain Ski Area. At those locations you can have fun without fear of skating on thin ice.

Relax at a Spa – Whether you have had a long and exhausting day at the office or you were working hard in the weather all day, relaxing at a spa is the perfect solution. You can relax your mind and body in the steam, salts, or aromatherapy, or treat your skin to a facial or detox, or go together for a couples massage. Body Kneads Spa & Massage or Himalayan Salt & Wellness Cave can help you find your winter zen.

Visit a Museum in Your Town – Sometimes we take for granted what we can find in our own backyards. The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles is a treat for the whole family. With a huge display of vintage vehicles and special events like blacksmithing and diner day, this museum is a gem! Learn about Boyertown’s past at the Boyertown History Museum. Or you can visit Boyertown’s newest museum, the General Carl Spaatz National USAAF Museum. You are bound to learn something and have fun too!

Try a New Restaurant – Let’s face it, we tend to get stuck in our same restaurant routines, eating at the same handful of places. Break out of that routine and try something new! If you haven’t already, try Boyertown’s newest restaurants, Barrel & Ale, Grind Restaurant, or Plaza Azteca.

Spend the Weekend at a Cabin or Bed & Breakfast – There are plenty of cabin rentals in the Poconos, whether you’re looking for large and small or fancy or no frills. Try a winter escape in the winter playland. If cabins are not your speed, you can enjoy a unique stay at a bed and breakfast. You don’t even have to go far; you can book a weekend at Boyertown’s own Twin Turrets Inn.

Chili Competition – How about you challenge your friends to a chili cookoff! Nothin’ warms up those winter bones than a nice hot bowl of chili. See who can make the best bowl to soothe the soul. Have all the participants come over for taste testing and good times. Win or lose, it will be fun and tasty!

Spruce Up Your Home – Take a crack at that home improvement list you’ve been meaning to start. It’s easy to feel cooped up in the winter, but freshening up your home can make you feel energized again. Reorganize your clothes to create some extra space in the bedroom, or paint the walls to create a brighter living room. Anything goes!

Game Night – Round up the family or you invite your friends over for game night! Break out the cards, a few board games, and some snacks and drinks. Nothing like an evening of friendly competition to break up the monotony of winter nights.

Take a Winter Hike – Grab your boots, bundle up and take a walk in the woods. Getting out into the fresh air will lift your spirits, even in the cold weather. Make sure you have shoes with enough tread to keep you steady, and check the weather ahead of time for safety.

Wine or Beer Tasting – Wineries, taprooms, and breweries feel even more welcoming during the cold winter months. Warm your body from the inside out while sipping some cheer with a good friend or friends. Tastings can feel a little more social and even educational. Check out some of our great local breweries, wineries, and distilleries. The Other Farm Brewing Company, Sly Fox Tastin’ Room, Ridgewood Winery, Adello Vineyard & Winery , Manatawny Creek Winery, Manatawny Still Works

Take an Art or Craft Class – Get creative! Get hands on! Get out of your house! Taking an art or craft class can be inspiring, fulfilling, and fun. Especially in a group setting and surrounded by positivity. Give it a try. Local classes are available at AR Workshop and ArtFusion 19464.

Go for an Evening Walk – Some of the most beautiful skies can be seen during the winter, so why not grab the family and enjoy a brisk walk under the stars? You’ll sneak in some exercise and quality time with the people you love. Just make sure to bundle up before you head out.
