ARE WE SKIPPING THANKSGIVING THIS YEAR?
I still have slightly rotting jack-o-lanterns on my front porch, and everybody is talking about Christmas already. What happened to Thanksgiving? It seems like everyone got a fast pass to the front of the Christmas line this year. Skip everything in between. Is it crazy that I want to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday before celebrating Christmas? I walked into Home Depot a week before Halloween and was shocked to see Christmas decorations on full display. There are people I know putting up their tree already. I see lights on homes earlier than I ever have. Sure, they say decorating for the holidays makes you happy, but does it really matter which holiday?
Now, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Christmas, but shouldn’t we cherish the season…well…during its own season? There’s something special about holding off on Christmas, and having it be a magical, limited edition, short amount of time, that only comes once a year.
The thing about skipping Thanksgiving is, that we are skipping that pause before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season really begins. No matter what is happening or who it is happening to, Thanksgiving is that chance to stop and reflect on the good in our lives, the things we are grateful for, and the people we love.
I grew up with the understanding that Santa Clause ushers in the Christmas season as he rides down the street in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Sure, I might sneak some Christmas songs in before that or get outside decorations up on a nice day, but there is no better way to start the merriest of seasons than being surrounded by family and stuffing yourself with turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie.
I am not telling anyone what or what not to do. You do you, but I am feeling a push by society lately to start Christmas earlier and earlier, and it’s starting to get to me. I would like to see others, especially retail stores, live more in the moment and not race to the next thing. Try taking the next couple of weeks to appreciate the down time, prep for the upcoming holidays, and most of all, enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.
