SPAATZ
General Carl A. Spaatz

General Carl Andrew Spaatz was born in Boyertown, Pennsylvania on June 28th, 1891. After high school, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. During his time in the academy, Spaatz acquired the nickname “Tooey” which stayed with him all his life. He graduated the academy as a second lieutenant of Infantry in June of 1914.

With the US’s entry into World War I in 1917, Spaatz was promoted to captain and placed in command of the 31st Aero Squadron in France. While training fighter pilots in France, he demonstrated exactly what he thought was his true military calling. Desperately wanting to join the air war, he repeatedly asked his superiors to transfer him to the front lines. After his requests were denied, Spaatz took matters into his own hands. In a flagrant act of insubordination, he literally walked away from his post and joined the fighting with a nearby aerial pursuit group. He managed three weeks of combat flight time, during which he received the Distinguished Service Cross for shooting down three German aircraft and was brevetted a major.

With many and varied command assignments, Spaatz amassed a brilliant Air Corps career as an administrator and planner of air power as well as being a pioneering flyer.

A few weeks after Pearl Harbor, as the US entered World War II, Spaatz was assigned as chief of the Army Air Force Combat Command at Washington and promoted to the temporary rank of major general. In 1942, he was assigned commander of the Eighth Air Force & the European Theater of Operations, to prepare for the American bombing of Germany. His accomplishments earned him an award of the Legion of Merit.

In 1944 Spaatz commanded the U.S. Strategic Air Forces in Europe, which he headed throughout the pre-invasion period and the ensuing campaign which culminated with the utter defeat of Germany. His accomplishments earned him the Robert J. Collier Trophy for that year, awarded annually to the American making the outstanding contribution to aviation.

In 1945 Spaatz assumed command of the U.S. Strategic Air Forces in the Pacific, with headquarters in Guam. There he supervised the final strategic bombing of Japan, though he personally opposed to the use of atomic bombs against Japanese cities. These bombings ultimately ending WW2. Spaatz attended all three signings of unconditional surrender by Axis powers at Reims, Berlin, and Tokyo.

Spaatz returned to Army Air Force Headquarters where President Harry S. Truman nominated him for promotion to the permanent rank of general. General Spaatz was appointed Commanding General of the Army Air Forces in 1946. In September 1947, President Truman appointed him as the first chief of staff of the new independent United States Air Force.

Spaatz retired with the rank of general on June 30, 1948. After retirement from the military, he worked for Newsweek magazine as military affairs editor until 1961. He served on the Committee of Senior Advisors to the Air Force Chief of Staff, Chairman of Civil Air Patrol’s National Board, and was the first President of the Air Force Historical Foundation.

General Spaatz died July 14, 1974, at the age of 83. He was buried at the United States Air Force Academy Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
