BOYERTOWN’S OKTOBERFEST 2021!

Strap on your lederhosen, throw on your dirndl, and call out to your friends on the alphorn, because it’s OKTOBERFEST! Building a Better Boyertown will be hosting it’s 14th Oktoberfest this Friday, September 17th from 5-10pm and Saturday, September 18th from 11am-10pm. This year is going to be geared more towards a authentic German Oktoberfest experience. There will be German dance groups and musicians throughout the event. You can also try your hand at axe throwing, keg bowling, stein relays, and stein holding competitions. Of course, they will be serving a variety of local and International Oktoberfest style beers too. This event isn’t just for adults, there will be activities for the kids as well, including face painting, caricatures, and bounce houses. Additionally, there will be a bunch of great crafters/vendors and food choices onsite throughout both days. So, gather up your friends and family and party like the Germans do this weekend…PROST!

Do you know how Oktoberfest started? Why is it held in September? Lets find out…

The original fest was the celebration of a Bavarian royal wedding. Princess Teresa (Therese) of Bavaria (1792-1854) had married crown prince Ludwig I (later king of Bavaria) on the evening of October 12, 1810. The next day, the city began celebrating the wedding with various activities, including concerts, parties, balls, and ended with a horse race on October 17th. It all went so well that the Bavarian royal family decided to hold another party and race a year later, beginning the Oktoberfest tradition.

In the following years, the celebrations were repeated and, later, the festival was prolonged and moved forward into September. By moving the festivities up, it allowed for better weather conditions. With warmer September nights, visitors were able to enjoy the gardens and outdoor festivities much longer.

Today, Oktoberfest takes place on a 104-acre area called Theresienwiese (Therese’s meadow), in Munich, Germany, and attracts over six million visitors each year. It is a 16-to-18-day event that begins in September and ends on the first Sunday in October – unless that Sunday falls on the 1st or 2nd, in which case the festival continues until October 3, a German national holiday (Reunification Day). There is an average 7,500,000 liters of beer sold during Oktoberfest, and it takes about 13,000 workers to put the event on each year. Munich’s Oktoberfest is known as the largest celebration in the world…and for good reason.
