THE KIDS ARE BACK TO SCHOOL…WHAT NOW?

A lot of parents look forward to the first day of school. Not only do they support growth and learning, but it’s also nice to have the house to themselves for a few hours each day. Summer can get pretty hectic, and school hours provide a much-needed breather.

For stay-at-home parents, those school hours provide a lot of opportunities. The question is, how do you fill up those empty hours in your calendar? Here are a few ways parents can make the most of their time while the kids are school this upcoming school year:

Clean Up From the Summer Havoc

Okay, okay, it’s not the most fun way to celebrate the kids going back to school, but the tornado of kids spinning through your home has finally blown through, and you now you have time to clean up the mess.  Just a few days of elbow grease should be all you need to reverse much of the damage left by summer festivities. You also have the time to now take on the organization projects that you wanted to get to all summer long.

Prepare for the Afternoons

When the kids get home the whirlwind picks up again with a afternoon full of homework, sports, after school activities, dinner, and projects. It would help to prepare during the day for the things that are scheduled for after school.

Do Some Meal Planning

If there is anything kids can do well, it’s eating and eating often. So, to avoid kitchen burnout, use your time while everyone is at school to do some meal planning. By planning out your weekly meals, you can do your grocery shopping more efficiently and even cut down on cooking time. Leftover dinner can provide lunch for all your kids the next day or even provide some meal variations for the entire week.

Improve Yourself

As an extension to that alone time, you can take a page out of your kids’ schoolbooks and look for some ways to improve yourself. For example, you can brush up on your math skills to help with homework, or even continue your own education. Maybe improve your health? You now have the time to use that gym membership you bought on January 1st. You could also just take a bike ride or jog around the neighborhood. Not only will you be improving your mental and physical self, but you can be happy about doing something positive during your hours of “free time”.

Start a Side Hustle

Being a stay-at-home parent is both admirable and awe-inspiring. However, some of these parents don’t feel completely fulfilled when their kids are away from home. Something you can do to “fill in the gaps” is getting a side job. Thanks to the magic of technology, it’s also easier than ever for stay-at-home parents to pick up a part-time job. In addition, working remotely opens up many more doors for employment with flexible schedules. There are other opportunities, like downloading a food delivery or ridesharing app and working during your “available hours”. Others require more creativity but can be more rewarding, like selling arts and crafts online, home baked goods, or offering lawn care and painting services. There’s really no limit to what you can do.

Enjoy the Alone Time

After a summer of constant family activities, you have earned some ‘me time’. So, kick up your feet for a spell and enjoy a few hours of peace and quiet. After decompressing on the couch for a couple of days, maybe you will want to make your alone time a little productive or at least enjoyable? Plan your days with some solitary activities that will ensure the entire afternoon isn’t spent napping. Here is a list of “me time” ideas:

  • Be a tourist in your own town
  • Go to a local park
  • Tour a brewery, winery, or distillery
  • Visit an animal shelter
  • Get lost in a library
  • Go fishing
  • Try out a new recipe
  • Spend Time with a friend or family
  • Volunteer
  • Visit a museum
  • Re-decorate your home
  • People watch
  • Try a new workout class
  • Have a spa day
  • Meditate
  • Take up a new hobby
  • Go to the movies
  • Go on a hike

Ultimately, it is your time. Do whatever you want!
