PARKS! A WAY TO HAVE A GREAT TIME WITHOUT SPENDING A DIME!

We are deep in the heart of summer and many of us have been enjoying family vacations, live music shows, carnivals, and all sorts of fun activities. All this fun can take a toll on the ol’ wallet or purse, though. Maybe there is something that the whole family can enjoy without depleting the vacation fund? The first places that come to my mind are parks. Parks can offer nature learning, hiking, biking, water, playgrounds, concerts, history, exhibitions and more! Many of these options offered by local parks are free or at a minimal cost. And, if you’re not careful, you and your family might have an educational experience while you are having fun too! Here is a list of some of the many parks around us that could be your next summer adventure…

Boyertown Community Park (Boyertown) – The Boyertown Community Park consists of a playground, two picnic pavilions, a band shell, a one mile walking trail, an eighteen hole disc golf course, and a community swimming pool. Summer events include Earth Day, Boyertown Fun Days, Comedy Under the Stars, Movies Under the Stars, Bike Night, and Duryea Days.

Earl Township Park (Boyertown) – You will find here three baseball/soccer fields, a challenging paved walking trail, two playgrounds, sand volleyball court, one set of horseshoe pits and two sets of quoit pits (you must bring your own horseshoes and quoits), two basketball nets, and a 9-Hole frisbee golf course. Dogs are permitted on the walking trails only and they must be on a leash at all times.

Memorial Park (Pottstown) – Pottstown Memorial Park is Pottstown’s primary destination, multi-use park, containing athletic fields, rental pavilion, creek-side walking paths, Trilogy Skate Park, Trilogy BMX Track, The Fountain of Youth Spray Park and The Pottstown Bark Park.

Monocacy Hill (Douglassville) – Monocacy Hill Recreation Area is a 428 acre forest located in Amity Township. It features about 6 miles of forest trails and is open year-round from dawn to dusk for a variety of activities. There are easy trails and harder trail. If you take the trail to the top of the hill, you will be awarded with a spectacular view! Park rules and trail maps are available at the park entrance on Geiger Road.

French Creek State Park (Douglassville) – This 7,730-acre park is the largest block of contiguous forest between Washington D.C. and New York City. The forests, lakes, wetlands, and fields are a destination for the people of southeast Pennsylvania to hike, fish, camp, and bike.

Green Lane Park (Green Lane) – Green Lane Park, in northwestern Montgomery County, offers a variety of year-round, outdoor activities and programs for people to choose from. Park visitors can enjoy fishing, boating (including boat rentals), family and group camping, picnicking, 25 miles of trails for horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking, as well as two children’s playgrounds. The park also offers summer concerts and family-oriented, environmental education programs on weekends.

Valley Forge National Historical Park (King of Prussia) – Valley Forge is the site of the 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army. The park features 3,500 acres of monuments, meadows, encampments, and woodlands commemorating the sacrifices and perseverance of the Revolutionary War. You will also find 35 miles of designated hiking trails that include key historic and interpretive sites, 19 miles of authorized biking trails that also include historic sites, Seventeen miles of designated horse trails, tours & reenactors, and visitor center.
