THE 2020 SUMMER OLYMPICS ARE FINALLY HERE!

It might be a year late, but the 2020 Summer Olympic Games kick off this Friday! With much question to when or if the Tokyo Olympic Games would take place, I am glad to see that the games are officially slated for July 23, 2021 – August 8, 2021. You can watch the the highly anticipated Tokyo Opening Ceremonies this Friday at 7:30 p.m. on NBC, as well as the NBC Sports app and NBCOlympics.com (LIVE STREAM LINK).

There are some new or returning Olympic sports to pay attention to. Missing in London and Rio, men’s baseball and women’s softball are back due to their huge popularity in Japan. Karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding are new to the Olympics. Rugby sevens and golf return after debuting in Rio.

Do you want to cheer on a local Olympian?

P-NUT

Keep an eye on Pottstown’s own Payton “P-Nut” Ridenour in this Olympics. She is a seven-time USA BMX national champion, and at just 19, Payton is the youngest athlete on the BMX racing team and one of the youngest athletes competing in the Tokyo Olympics. She is a 2020 graduated of Owen J Roberts High School. Throughout high school, Ridenour was both a straight-A student and a longtime rider at Trilogy Park BMX Track in Pottstown. Ridenour’s father, Keith, who is also a longtime BMX rider, introduced Payton to BMX track riding around age 5 and she never looked back. Ridenour is sponsored by Mongoose Bikes, WD-40, Shimao and the USA BMX Foundation, which is a non-profit that offers cycling-inspired STEM education programs for U.S. elementary schools. She recently completed her first children’s book called “A to Z: BMX Style.” She hopes that this book will inspire children to be interested in BMX bike riding. Go, Payton!
