IT’S (almost) ALL ABOUT CHEESECAKE!

My new yummy dessert hot spot, Semper Pie, is celebrating it’s Grand Opening in Boyertown this Saturday! They specialize in, by far, the best cheesecake I have had the joy of eating. Owners, Crystal and Kevin, are partners in both business and marriage. They have worked hard over the past seven months to build their cheesecake business from online sales in their home, to now opening their very own storefront. They are the first ones to give all the credit to their family, friends, customers, and community support. I think that some of that credit is due to their delicious cheesecakes, unique flavors, and their bright personalities too. I had the joy of interviewing them on “The Cast at Glocker” about a month ago and I was intrigued by their story. During that interview, I learned about their initiative, #GivingBackByTheSlice, where they are donating a portion of every sale to different charities. With Kevin’s background as a military veteran, they are passionate about giving back to his military brothers. With that being said, a portion of all sales from February through September, will be donated to the Fisher House Foundation, which helps home military families with hospitalized loved ones. From what I have learned about Kevin and Crystal, is that the care they put into making a great cheesecake stems from how much they care about each other, the people that surround them, and their community.

If you want to join in on the Grand Opening celebration and try some damn good cheesecake, you should stop by Semper Pie at 14 S Reading Ave, Boyertown, this Saturday, May 22, between 11AM-3PM. There will also be fun festivities, including live music and basket raffles!

Here are some fun facts about CHEESECAKE!

  •  The first “cheesecake” may have been created on the Greek island of Samos. Physical anthropologists excavated cheese molds there which were dated circa 2,000 B.C.
  • The American style cheesecake is not a cake; it’s a baked cheese custard pie with a crust. The uncooked custard filling is poured into a crust and then baked.
  • It is believed that cheesecakes were served to athletes competing during the first Olympic games in 776 B.C. to give them energy.
  • Modern commercial American cream cheese was developed in 1872, when William Lawrence, from Chester, New York, while looking for a way to recreate the soft, French cheese Neufchâtel.
  • The most expensive cheesecake sold for $4,592.42 and was made by chef Raffaele Ronca at Ristorante Rafele in New York on October 30, 2017. The cheesecake included ingredients such as buffalo ricotta, white truffle, and gold leaves.
  • The largest cheesecake ever made weighed 4,703 pounds.  Philadelphia Kraft Foods Mexico made the cake on January 25, 2009 in Mexico.
  • Even though he is best known for his signature sandwiches, Arnold Reuben (1883-1970) is generally credited for creating the New York Style cheesecake. Reuben was born in Germany and he came to America when he was young. The story goes that Reuben was invited to a dinner party where the hostess served a cheese pie. Allegedly, he was so intrigued by this dish that he experimented with the recipe until he came up with the beloved NY Style cheesecake.
