Here is what’s going down during the week of 5/13/2021 – 5/19/2021

THERE’S NOTHING SWEETER THAN HONEY!

It was just yesterday my son said to me “Daddy, there’s some bees making a nest in the tree over there!” I looked over to where he was pointing, and to my surprise, there was a large a swarm of bees flying around the tree. Immediately I went into dad action and declared, “I will grab the spray and take care of those nasty bees!” About halfway to the garage I had a thought come over me. Hmmm? My brain literally said “hmmm”, and I thought on, “Those bees didn’t look like hornets or wasps or even yellow jackets?” I though maybe I should take a better look. I slowly crept up to the tree and soon realized that it was a nest of honey bees. Lots of honeybees! I certainly couldn’t kill all those honey bees which offer so many good things for our ecosystem, plus they make delicious honey! So, what do I do? I can’t have these bees swarming around our back yard all the time, but I don’t want to kill them either. The only thing I could think to do was search for honey businesses in the area and see if they would come get them. One of the places that came up in my search was The Honey Bee Tree, with parentheses, (Honey + Rescue & Removal Services). I quickly gave them a call and spoke with Emily, the owner. She was pleasant to talk to and excited to help. Emily and her son were at our house within an hour. She was very gracious for our call and thanked us for not spraying them. They promptly got to work on removing the bees. Our children loved watching all the bee keeping excitement and most importantly, the honey bees where saved!

If you find yourself in a situation where you have honey bees making a home were you don’t want them, please think twice about spraying them. There are many bee keepers out there that would be happy to take them off your hands. Plus honey bees make magical honey! Honey is the only food that never spoils and truly lasts forever. Honey bees are also the most efficient pollinators. Not only do honey bees pollinate wild and native plants, but they also pollinate our crops, our food supply! So, next time you see a swarm of honey bees, don’t spray, make a quick call and know that you are not just saving the honey bee, but all of us as well.
