CORNHOLE!

Have you ever played the game of Cornhole? If not, you must try it! It is fun for all ages, which makes it the perfect game for backyard barbeques. Because of it’s portability and popularity, you can also find it played at beaches, breweries, bars, and campgrounds across the United States. The popularity of this game has spiked over the past fifteen years and is becoming more and more popular. What is Cornhole?

Cornhole or Corn Toss is similar to horseshoes except you use wooden inclined boxes called cornhole platforms and corn bags instead of horseshoes and metal stakes. Contestants take turns pitching their corn bags at the cornhole platform until a contestant reaches the score of 21 points. A corn bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the platform scores 1 point. Although the rules are pretty basic and straight forward, as with any game, there are variations to the rules which offer room for dispute. I like to follow the most important rule that overrides all other rules, “the house (where you are playing) makes the rules”. Period!

But where did this sport originate?

There are several theories to the origins the game of Cornhole.

Cincinnati, Ohio likes to lay claim to the original area where bags were filled with kernels and tossed into plywood holes. Whether that’s true or not, this backyard game has been insanely popular there for years.

The people of Kentucky stake claim that in the 1800’s an early pioneer by the name Jebediah McGillicuddy played a version of the game in the foothills of Kentucky where it continues to be extremely popular today.

Other stories say that the game was invented by the resourceful Blackhawk Native Americans in Illinois using dried animal bladders stuffed with corn and tossing them competitively.

Farmers across the US with proud German heritage will argue that a German cabinet maker by the name of Matthias Kuepermann created the game after watching children toss rocks into a nearby groundhog’s hole. Kuepermann did not like the boys throwing rocks, so he utilized his carpentry skills and designed a game with two wooden boxes and burlap bags filled with corn. The boys were safer, and the groundhogs were probably happier too.

Whatever the origins, no one can argue that this game of throwing skill is tons of fun and here to stay!

Do you want to test your skills at the game of Cornhole? The Foundation for Boyertown Education is hosting their Inaugural Cornhole Tournament this Sat at 11AM. The tournament will be held at Gabelsville Athletic Association in Boyertown. The entree ticket includes a box lunch and 1st & 2nd place will receive cash prizes! Team up with a partner and join the fun!

BLINDFOLDED ADULT EASTER EGG HUNT? Hey! Adults can have Easter egg hunt fun too. And fun is what you will have if you head out to the Ridgewood Winery in Bechtelsville this Saturday at 2PM. Pre-game warmup will be pizza and salad, then the hunt begins at 3:30. There will be 300 eggs with an assortment of gift certificates, lottery tickets, slushie drink coupons, candy bars, etc. Also, a “Best Decorated Easter Basket” contest for a special prize! Yes, there will be wine and wine slushies available for purchase throughout the event. Tickets are $22. Wine, blindfolds, and eggs with prizes… sounds like a good time to me!
