Find Your Om and Leave Stress Behind

Noise! Noise! Noise! World pandemic. Work. Social Media. News. Isolation. Fear. Are all these things building your stress level and causing you anxiety? Well, you are not alone. I think that most people are feeling some level of adverse emotion at this point. Healing your body and mind is part of the normal daily activities that you do during everyday life. Whether it is talking with workmates, stopping by the gym for a run on the treadmill, having drinks with a close friend, or a fun weekend activity with a group of friends, it all gives you the mental and/or physical release that the human body needs. The problem is, there is nothing normal about everyday life right now. Everybody is stuck in their homes more than they should be, separated from family and friends, and living their lives through screens. Hopefully…shortly…life will start getting back to “normal”. Until then, there are ways to help heal the mental and physical stress of our current situation.

After researching the internet, I have gathered information on the ways that top health officials are advising to cope with today’s mental and physical strain. I hope you find the items below to be helpful and beneficial. Remember, when you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, or isolated, you are not alone.

Take a break from media consumption:

Today’s 24/7 news alerts can present challenges for those dealing with anxiety. Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including those on social media. Limit checking news outlets to once or twice a day. Do not check the news or social media before bedtime. Try disconnecting from phone, tv, and computer screens altogether for part of the day. Constantly tuning into the news increases stress and often draws attention to things that you have little or no control over.

Breath:

Find a relaxation practice that suits you. When stressors throw your nervous system out of balance, relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, stretching, and yoga can bring you back into a state of equilibrium. Taking time to pause for just three full, deep breaths can re-set the body’s “flight or fight” response. Try doing this several times throughout the day and see the difference it makes.

Go outside:

No matter what the season, take an opportunity to get outside and experience nature. Step away from your home office and take a walk around your neighborhood or a local trail. If you have kids, go on a nature scavenger hunt or play “I spy” in the yard. Fresh air and even small amounts of activity can relieve tension and lower blood pressure.

Help your body:

Find ways to exercise. Staying active will help you release anxiety, relieve stress, and manage your mood. While gym and group classes may be out, you can still bike, hike, or walk. If you can’t get outside, look online for exercise videos you can follow. There are many things you can do even without equipment, such as yoga and exercises that use your own bodyweight.

Eat healthy. Have you heard the saying “you are what you eat”? It’s true! A healthy diet can reduce the negative effects of stress on your body and can help improve your immune system.

Get a good night’s sleep. Sleep and mood are closely connected. Poor or inadequate sleep can cause irritability and stress, while healthy sleep can enhance well-being.

Avoid self-medicating. Be careful that you’re not using alcohol or other substances to deal with anxiety or depression.

Be creative or do what you enjoy:

Using your hands and your creative brain can be a great way to relieve stress. It helps you focus on the present and relieves your mind of all the other “stuff”. If you have arts and crafts supplies on hand, use them to create something special. There are fun crafts that artists of all ages and skill levels can make using just household items. If creativity isn’t your thing, read a good book, watch a comedy, play a fun board or video game. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as it takes you out of your worries.

Reach out:

It is important to keep in touch with the people you love. This can be done through phone calls, texting, emailing and video calls. Human connection can lower stress and anxiety levels. Also, don’t be afraid to talk to a professional. Many experts are available to provide virtual support. You might want to connect with your community, or faith-based organizations as well.
