“O CHRIRSTMAS TREE”…WHY??

Why in the world do we cut down a tree and bring it into our house for Christmas? Why decorate it with ornaments and lights? We all love this tradition of decorating our tree and the smell of pine wafting through the home, but where did this tradition come from? Let’s find out.

After doing some research, I learned that Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition. But why?

Well, it is widely believed that in the 16th-century, Martin Luther began the tradition of bringing a fir tree into the home. According to the legend, late one evening, Martin Luther was walking home through the woods and noticed how beautifully the stars shone through the trees. He wanted to share the beauty with his wife, so he cut down a fir tree and took it home. Once inside, he placed small, lighted candles on the branches and said that it would be a symbol of the beautiful Christmas sky. The Christmas tree was born.

Hmmm? Why do we add decorations?

It is written that the first Christmas trees were decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and gold covered apples and other sweets that, on Christmas Day, the children were invited to enjoy. Then glass makers started making special small ornaments, similar to some of the decorations used today. In 1605 an unknown German author wrote: “At Christmas they set up fir trees in the parlours of Strasbourg and hang thereon roses cut out of many-colored paper, apples, wafers, gold foil, sweets, etc.”

So, it became a Christian tradition in Germany, but how did it make its way to America?

As German settlers ventured to the new world, so came their traditions, one being the Christmas tree. The first record of a tree being on display was in the 1830s by the German settlers of Pennsylvania, although trees had been a tradition in many German homes much earlier. But this Christmas symbol was not well favored until 1846, when Queen Victoria and her German Prince, Albert, were sketched standing with their children around a Christmas tree in the London News. Due to the Queen’s immense popularity, the Christmas tree became fashionable—not only in Britain, but with the fashion-conscious East Coast American Society. The Christmas tree had arrived.

Through the 20th-century and now modern times, the Christmas tree has become a symbol of Christmas in many American homes and throughout the world. The decorations, the lights, and even the place where Santa leaves his gifts for good boys and girls; I couldn’t imagine Christmas without that beautiful evergreen standing so proudly in my living room, glistening from head to toe. “O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, How Lovely are thy branches.”

SEE THE CHRISTMAS STAR on the night of Dec 21st. Jupiter and Saturn will appear so close together after sunset on Monday that they will look like a single, bright star. This celestial spectacle has not occured in the northern hemisphere for 400 years. It is being referred to as the “Star of Bethlehem” due to its brightness, similar to the star that is said to have guided the three wise men to Bethlehem. Look to the skies on the 21st for a site that will be sure to brighten your night.
