A Look Back at the Past 100 Years

The new year has just begun and no matter what your 2024 was like, good or bad, it’s time to hit the new year’s refresh button with a fresh start. You can start the year with the mantra “I will thrive in 2025!” While the new year brings hope, optimism, and new beginnings, it’s also a good time to reflect and remember the past. So, let’s look back at what the previous ###5’s have brought us over the past century…

1925

  • The Grand Ole Opry, originally called the “WSM Barn Dance,” made its radio debut.
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald published his novel “The Great Gatsby.”
  • New York City became the world’s most populated city, a distinction that it held until 1965. Prior to 1925, London had been the world’s most populous city. Today, Tokyo holds that title.
  • The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held.
  • Born: June Lockhart, actress, AND Dick Van Dyke, actor

1935

  • The Hoover Dam was completed, becoming one of the largest man-made structures in the world.
  • The first canned beer was sold in the United States by the Krueger Brewing Company.
  • Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California.
  • Monopoly, the famous board game, was released by Parker Brothers.
  • Born: Elvis Presley, singer & actor, AND Julie Andrews, actress & singer

1945

  • World War II ends! This marks fall of Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan
  • The United Nations was founded in San Francisco, aiming to promote peace and cooperation.
  • The microwave oven was invented by Percy Spencer.
  • The ballpoint pen was sold in the United States for the first time.
  • Born: Steve Martin, comedian & actor, AND Goldie Hawn, actress

1955

  • Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California, becoming the first-ever theme park of its kind.
  • The phrase ‘In God We Trust’ was added to all US currency
  • McDonald’s began franchising its fast-food restaurants.
  • The TV show “The Honeymooners” premiered.
  • Born: Reba McEntire, country singer, AND Kevin Costner, actor

1965

  • The Beatles performed the first stadium concert in history at Shea Stadium in New York.
  • The Voting Rights Act was signed into law, prohibiting racial discrimination in voting.
  • Pickleball was created in Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three neighbors as an activity for their children.
  • The Pillsbury Doughboy made his debut in TV commercials.
  • Born: Brooke Shields, model & actress, AND Robert Downey Jr., actor

1975

  • Saturday Night Live debuted on NBC, revolutionizing comedy and live TV.
  • Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen.
  • The Kool-Aid man began appearing in commercials for Kool-Aid.
  • The movie “Jaws” was released, becoming the first summer blockbuster.
  • Born: Drew Barrymore, actress, AND Bradley Cooper, actor

1985

  • The first version of Windows, Windows 1.0, was released by Microsoft.
  • The iconic Coca-Cola recipe was changed to “New Coke,” but was reverted after public backlash.
  • The first Back to the Future movie was released, becoming a cultural phenomenon.
  • Live Aid concerts were held simultaneously in London and Philadelphia to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia.
  • Born: Michael Phelps, Olympic swimmer, AND Anna Kendrick, actress

1995

  • The DVD was introduced, revolutionizing home entertainment.
  • Dolly, the cloned sheep was born on July 5th and lived for seven years.
  • Toy Story, the first fully computer-animated film, premiered.
  • The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum opened in Cleveland, Ohio.

2005

  • YouTube was founded by three former PayPal employees.
  • The TV show “The Office” premiered in the United States.
  • Pandora Radio, the online music service, was launched.
  • The iPod Nano was released by Apple.

2015 

  • Hamilton: An American Musical debuted on Broadway, taking the world by storm.
  • NASA announced the discovery of liquid water on Mars.
  • Same-sex marriage became legal across the United States after a Supreme Court ruling.
  • The popular holiday gifts were Hoverboards, smart TVs, and the Guitar Hero Live video game.
  • Born: Delia Rose Joel, daughter of rock star Billy Joel, AND Asher Colton Spence, actor
