THANKSGIVING 2020? WHAT TO DO?

I know, I know, I know, you want your normal Thanksgiving. Well this year is certainly not normal. So, put on those thinking caps and figure out a way to make it fun anyway. Here are some ideas to get those neurons sparking…

Do the normal tv watching Although the parades will be a little different this year, you will still be able to watch the annual 6abc Dunkin’ Thanksgiving Day Parade at 8:30am or the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade at 9am. Also, no fear football is here; Texans vs Lions at 12:30, Washington vs Cowboys at 4:30, and Ravens vs Steelers at 8:20. For the dog lovers out there, the National Dog Show will be airing at 12:00 noon.

Ditch Tradition Throw traditions out the window. Do whatever you want, eat whatever you want! There are no rules; it’s 2020.

Decorate your home for Thanksgiving The easiest way to make it feel like the holidays is to decorate like it’s the holidays. Even if no one is coming over this year, adding a few festive touches will lift your spirits. A cool centerpiece can go a long way in setting the Thanksgiving mood.

Make a Thanksgiving craft Try an arts and crafts project. Making something as simple as a handprint turkey will be a fun way keep the kids occupied. Margie from MJ’s Legacy had a good idea to make advent gift bags for the kids. (see The Cast at Glocker episode below for her detailed instructions)

Go on a family walk or bike ride Enjoy the fresh air! Break out your bicycles and take a spin around the block. I’s a great way to get moving before you get eating. It’s been a family tradition, since I was a child, for everyone to take a walk between dinner and desert on Thanksgiving. This way you don’t feel guilty for eating all the yummy pies and treats.

Play an outdoor game Playing an outdoor game is the perfect way for the family to have some outside fun. You can play bean bag toss (cornhole), ladder golf, frisbee toss, etc. You could also set up a scavenger hunt for the kids. They would love it!

Mix a fall cocktail There are so many yummy fall flavors that taste delicious in cocktails. Mix individual drinks or whip up a large batch of punch. Maybe a hot drink, especially if you are doing some outdoor activities. Serve up some mulled cider or wine, or hot cocoa for the kids. Get creative and add cinnamon sticks, marshmallows or whipped cream.

Host Thanksgiving outdoors If the weather cooperates, you might be able to gather for a short time outside to enjoy a little turkey and stuffing with your friends and family.

or

Zoom during dinner If you can’t travel to be with loved ones, or the weather won’t cooperate for an outdoor event, you can still gather together virtually. Set up the video device at a spot that everyone can see and enjoy dinner together. Zoom is allowing users unlimited time on Thanksgiving Day.

A movie marathon After dinner, conclude your evening with a classic Thanksgiving movie or two. There are so many to choose from including, You’ve Got Mail, Paul Blart Mall Cop, Free Birds, Home for the Holidays, and my personal favorite, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Whatever you decide to do, if you put in a little effort, you can still make this a Thanksgiving to remember!
