The Story of the First Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, traces back to a historic feast between Native Americans and settlers in 1621. Long before settlers arrived, southeastern Massachusetts and eastern Rhode Island were home to the Wampanoag people for over 12,000 years. When English Puritans, known as Pilgrims, landed in 1620 after their voyage on the Mayflower, they struggled through their first harsh winter.

Help came from Squanto, a Wampanoag who taught the settlers to grow crops and fish. By autumn 1621, the settlers organized a harvest celebration. Alarmed by the settlers’ gunfire, Wampanoag leader Massasoit arrived with 90 men to investigate. Upon learning it was a feast, they contributed deer for a three-day celebration of food, games, and dancing.

While this moment symbolized unity, peace between the groups was short-lived, and the Wampanoag people view Thanksgiving as a day of mourning, remembering the loss and betrayal that followed.

The modern Thanksgiving holiday was later shaped in the 19th century, becoming a national holiday in 1863 under President Abraham Lincoln, honoring blessings and unity amidst the Civil War. Today, it it is celebrated as a day for gathering with family and/or friends, and is known as a day to give thanks.
