Here is what’s going down during the week of 11/12 – 11/18/2020

ALL SEVEN PLANETS ARE VISIBLE THIS MONTH!

For all you stargazers out there, this month will give you a nice treat. Just look up to the sky to see Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus, and Mercury with the naked eye.  Uranus and Neptune are up there too, but you will need binoculars to get a good look. The night sky can be awe-inspiring, calming, and breath-taking, so take a break from the world, look up, and take a mental trip to the vast reaches of our solar system.

Mercury – The smallest planet and closest to the sun. It is dark gray in color and has an 88-day orbit. Find Mercury in the morning during the first few weeks of November.

Venus – Named after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty. Venus is the brightest planet, because it is covered with clouds that reflect the Sun’s light. It has a 225-day orbit. In early November, Venus will rise three hours before the sun. By the end of the month, however, it will rise about two and a half hours before the sun.

Mars – Also known as the “Red Planet”, because of its iron rich landscape that gives it a rusty-red color. It is named after the Roman God of war and has a 697-day orbit. Mars was brightest during October; however, it is still very visible this month. Last month, it was brighter than it will be again until September 2035.

Jupiter – The largest planet in the solar system, also known as the “Gas Giant”. It is two and a half times larger than all the other planets combined. Wow! It takes 12 years to orbit the Sun.

Saturn – Known for the ice and rock rings that encircle the planet, it is easily recognized.  These rings are visible through a quality telescope. Saturn takes 29 years to orbit the Sun.

Both Jupiter and Saturn will be visible as soon as the sun sets, during the month of November. Jupiter is much brighter than Saturn, so look for it first. You can then use it as a reference point to see Saturn. Both planets will appear very bright throughout the month.

Uranus – The butt of many jokes, you see what I did there. It is mostly made of ice and known as the “Ice Giant”. One time around the Sun takes 84 years.

Neptune – The eighth, and farthest planet from the Sun is also made up of ice and is a near-twin of Uranus. It takes a whopping 165 years to orbit the sun!

Both Uranus and Neptune will be visible during the evenings this month; however, you may have difficulty getting a clear view without help. You will likely be able to see Uranus with a set of binoculars, but Neptune will require a good telescope or long-range binoculars if you want a clear view.

It is rare occurence that all seven planets will be visible in the same month. For this reason, now is the time to take advantage of this extraordinary celestial event. With many of our regular activities and entertainment put on hold, the planets are stepping in to fill the void. This Sunday you can take advantage of the New Moon’s dark sky to get a clear view of the planets and stars. Happy star gazing!
