Here is what’s going down during the week of 11/5 – 11/11/2020
PREPARE NOW FOR THE COLD WEATHER AHEAD
With the trees shedding their bright colors to bare their naked limbs and just a few weeks before Thanksgiving, it is the perfect time to start prepping your home for the colder days to come. Take advantage of the still somewhat warmer weather to do the things that you do not want to get stuck doing in the dead of winter. Here are some ideas to guide you in the right direction.
Make sure to check your home’s heating and air conditioning system. Take this time to change your filters, at the very least. I recommend having the system inspected by a reputable HVAC contractor. Have the contractor check your system and make sure your heat is going to work when you need it. It is much better to find an HVAC problem in the moderate temperatures of the fall than it is to find your furnace doesn’t work on a frigid winter day.
Clean your gutters! Once the leaves are pretty much off the trees, it’s time to clean those gutters. When your gutters back up, they overflow, and when they overflow, that water runs down your home, speeding up the deterioration of your exterior. It can also lead to deterioration of your foundation, water infiltration in the basement and to settling under your concrete porches and walks, which creates all kinds of problems.
Check your chimney and order firewood, pellets, or coal. Have your fireplace inspected and cleaned before you start building those cozy fires in the next couple of months. A good chimney sweep company will make sure the fireplace is safe to use, and it can also identify maintenance problems that could cause fires or carbon monoxide to enter your home. Also, make sure you are stocked up on all your heating fuels for the season.
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Winter is the time most house fires happen. It’s the time of year when we’re blasting the furnace and building fires. We are also much more likely to have our home closed up tight, so carbon monoxide is a much bigger hazard. Check all of your smoke detectors to make sure they are working and that they have good batteries. If your home is not equipped with carbon monoxide detectors, consider getting some. The HVAC inspection will also ensure your furnace and water heater are properly vented, which is the most likely source of carbon monoxide.
Rake or mulch your leaves. Don’t let tree leaves smother your grass. Contrary to popular belief, fallen tree leaves will not insulate your lawn during winter. In fact, they can be a total buzzkill by blocking vital sunlight and thinning your grass. Mulching your leaves to dime-sized pieces with your lawnmower will help give your lawn the nutrients that it needs. If you have too many leaves to mulch, you can compost them or rake them up for your local leaf pick up or drop off.
Check for any gaps around windows and door frames. If any of the gaps can fit a credit card, you will lose a tremendous amount of heat out of your home and in turn skyrocketing your heating costs. Use silicone caulk (sealant) on the outside of the windows and door frames to fill any gaps. Make sure you get an exterior all-weather caulk that will last for many seasons to come.
Bring garden hoses and sprinklers inside. Leaving your hoses and sprinklers outside can cause them damage, especially if they still have water in them. Allowing the water to freeze in a hose outside can cause it to expand and spring leaks, the same thing can happen to the taps and faucets if you leave the hose connected to the home systems. Remove all the hoses and bring them into your garage or shed and make sure the water is drained out of them. Also, make sure that your exterior faucets are shut off from the inside or they are the “frost free” type that are protected from freezing.
Clean your tools and store them. Before you put your lawn equipment away for the season, clean and prep them. Don’t throw your gardening tools in the shed and forget about them until spring. Take time to give them a good cleaning and add a light coat of oil to prevent rust during the cold season. Gas goes bad as it sits, so you want add a fuel stabilizer into the gas to prevent it from gunking up the filters and lines.
Get ready for the snow! Dig out the snowblower and fire it up before the big one hits. Make sure it’s ready for that snowy morning. If it’s not, then get it repaired now. Also take inventory of your snow melt and shovel situation. Grab a shovel and a few bags of snow melt now, so you are not scrambling to the store right before the storm. For pet-friendly ice melt, choose magnesium chloride. It is also recommended not to use salt blends on concrete and especially not new concrete. Using sand for traction is the safest choice on concrete.
If you prepare now for whatever old man winter might through at us, you will have much warmer and relaxing days ahead.

Thank you so much for sponsoring a scarecrow on the poles of Boyertown. That is how I realize their may be someone who could keep us informed about events in town. It seems like there is a secret society you need to join in order to know what is going on. And sadly, I do not think Build a Better Boyertown has been up to the task and that covers years. I hope you can make a difference because this town and its people are amazing.
Thank you Deb. I hope you are enjoying the blog. I do agree that there is a lot of great stuff happening in and around Boyertown, and the people are a big part of that. BBB does a lot to help the community grow, but yes, I also noticed a void in an informative outlet for all that there is happening around town. That is what spurred on the idea of “What’s Going Down in Boyertown”. My goal is to make the site an easy, one stop place to find all the events around Boyertown and shine a light on community projects and the prople who are striving to to lift up the town. If you have any sugestion on how to make the site better in any way, I am always up for suggestions. If you haven’t already, you should watch my podcast “The Cast at Glocker”. We are live every Wednesday at 6:00 on YouTube and Facebook. Each week we speak with a guest from the commmunity and highlight some of the Boyertown events. It is sort of a live version of the blog. This Wednesday 12/2 we will have Jillian Magee, Manager of Building a Better Boyertown, on. I hope you can join us. We highly encourage interaction with our viewers. Thanks again for the kind words and I hope you keep enjoyng the blog. Enjoy the holidays!
