HISTORY OF INDEPENDENCE DAY – On July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence, signed at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA, was approved by the 2nd Continental Congress of the United States. This occurred during the Revolutionary War with Great Britain and declared the United States no longer under rule by the British king. America was born!
The anniversary of the day has been celebrated on July 4th every year since, but it wasn’t until nearly 100 years later in 1870 that the federal government made July 4th a national holiday. Happy Independence Day!
Here are some fun Facts About Independence Day
There were around 2.5 million people living in the United States when independence was declared in 1776. Today there are over 328 million people in the country.
The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. This was also the day that the Declaration of Independence was first read in public after people were summoned by the ringing of the Liberty Bell.
Every 4th of July the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped (not actually rung) thirteen times in honor of the original thirteen colonies.
Benjamin Franklin proposed the turkey as the national bird but was overruled by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who recommended the bald eagle.
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both presidents and signers of the Declaration of Independence, died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of Independence Day. President James Monroe also died on July 4th and President Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4th.
Each year there is a famous hot dog eating contest at Coney Island, New York. Around 40,000 people show up to watch and millions watch it on TV. The 2019 winners ate 71 hot dogs (man) and 31 hot dogs (woman) in ten minutes.
Barbecue is also big on Independence Day. Approximately 150 million hot dogs and 700 million pounds of chicken are consumed on this day.
The longest running celebration is said to be the Bristol Fourth of July Parade in Rhode Island which has been running since 1785.
