Presidents’ Day is a U.S. federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Increasingly, the holiday has become an occasion to celebrate the birthdays of both President George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln.

As we commemorate Presidents’ Day this upcoming Monday, February 19th, let’s take a quick look at the legacies of these two iconic figures in American history: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

George Washington

George Washington, revered as the Father of the United States, was a towering figure in American history, embodying the ideals of leadership, integrity, and dedication to country. Born in Virginia in 1732, Washington’s early life was shaped by his career as a surveyor and his service in the British Army during the French and Indian War, experiences that honed his leadership and tactical skills. Unanimously elected as the first President of the United States in 1789, after leading the Continental Army to victory over the British in the Revolutionary War, Washington set the standards for the presidency, including the establishment of the Cabinet system and the tradition of a two-term limit. His presidency was marked by efforts to unite the fledgling nation, navigate it through its formative challenges, and establish precedents in governance that would guide its future. Washington’s voluntary relinquishment of power and return to private life at Mount Vernon after his presidency exemplified his commitment to American democracy. His death in 1799 was mourned as a national loss, and his legacy endures as a symbol of national pride and the embodiment of American ideals.

Here are some of Washington’s most famous quotes…

  • “It is far better to be alone, than to be in bad company.”
  • “Happiness and moral duty are inseparably connected.”
  • “Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth.”
  • “Observe good faith and justice towards all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all.”
  • “It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one.”
  • “Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light.”
  • “Perseverance and spirit have done wonders in all ages.”

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is renowned for his pivotal role in leading the nation through one of its darkest periods, the Civil War. Born in a log cabin in Kentucky in 1809, Lincoln rose from humble beginnings to become a self-taught lawyer, Illinois state legislator, and eventually, President. His leadership during the Civil War, marked by his commitment to preserving the Union and ending slavery, solidified his place in history as one of America’s greatest presidents. Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 declared slaves in Confederate territories to be free, a bold move that fundamentally shifted the war’s moral purpose. Despite facing immense political and personal challenges, Lincoln’s steadfast determination, eloquence, and vision for a united nation helped steer the country through its most turbulent times. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865, just days after the Confederate surrender, leaving a legacy of courage, integrity, and enduring dedication to equality and justice.

Here are some of Lincoln’s most famous quotes…

  • “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any one thing.”
  • “The struggle of today is not altogether for today – it is for a vast future also.”
  • “Folks are usually as happy as they make their minds up to be.”
  • “Those who look for the bad in people will surely find it.”
  • “I walk slowly, but I never walk backward.”
  • “Leave nothing for tomorrow which can be done today.”
  • “The past is the cause of the present, and the present will be the cause of the future. All these are links in the endless chain stretching from the finite to the infinite.”
