My Own Personal Haunting

Last week I shared a ghost story from a local ghost hunter and historian. I thought this week I would share a personal experience of my own.

It was a night that I have never forgotten. Although it happened over two decades ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. The thing I saw that night was not an illusion or my mind playing tricks on me. It was…well, let me tell you the story.

I was around the age of twenty-two and I was bartending at a local historic bar/restaurant. The night was just like any other. The crowed was thinning out. It was almost closing time. As the last person was leaving the bar, I said goodnight and locked the door behind him. It was late. I had a good night, but now I was ready to go home. So, I started putting everything away and shut down the bar for the night. I never felt weird or spooked when closing the bar alone. It certainly wasn’t the first time I had done it. As I was turning off the electronic game machines, my eyes glanced out into the dining room of the bar. To my surprise, I saw a man sitting at a table no more than ten feet away from me. He sat there clear as day, but not quite as a solid form. My heart stopped for a moment, because I knew that no one should have been in the building besides me. I shuttered back and looked away for a split second. When I looked back, there was no one there. I quickly looked around. There was no one to be seen in the room. Chills went down my spine. I was officially freaked out! I immediately turned off all the lights and ran out of the building as quickly as I could. I drove home faster then I should have and could not shake the image of the figure that I had seen at the table.

The next day, the incident from the night before was still in my head, but the light of day had me rationalizing that it had just been my imagination. I drove back to work that morning to open for the lunch rush. I walked in and greeted the owner, who was sitting at a table by the bar, as he normally did. I peeked my head back into the kitchen to greet the cooks and to put my lunch order in, so that I could eat before the bar opened. I set up the bar, grabbed my sandwich, then sat down next to my boss. I chatted with him for a bit about everyday things. While talking to him, my mind kept going back to what I had seen the night before. I decided I had to tell him. So, I blurted out, “I saw something weird last night when I was closing up.” He looked at me with a half grin and said, “What do you mean?” I told him, “I was just about to leave last night and I thought I saw someone sitting at a table…but there was no one there.” He grinned again and said, “Was he sitting at that table?” as he pointed his finger to the exact table where I had seen the figure sitting. With surprise and hesitation, I said, “Yeah.” He went on to ask me if he looked like an older man with old farmer type clothing on. Once again, the chills went down my spine, because yes, that was a perfect description of the man I had seen. Now my head was going wild! My boss went on to tell me that, over the years, people had told him about seeing the same vision of a man sitting at that very table. He speculated that the man we all had seen was the farmer that originally owned the farmhouse that the present structure is a part of. Maybe he is looking for a bite to eat? Maybe he wants to visit his old home? The fact that I wasn’t the only one to see this apparition, and that my boss was able to give me details about what I had seen, before I even told him, assured me that I definitely saw – something – that night.

Although, that was the only time in which I saw an apparition, it was not the only strange event I witnessed during my years of tending bar there. I have other stories that I, or others who were with me, could not explain. So, if you ask me if I believe in ghosts, I will have to respond with, “Yes, I believe.”

Can you find something strange in these photos?
