Are you ready to ring in the new year? Ready or not here it comes! If you were not a fan of 2023, just think of the new year as a refresh button. If you had the best year of your life in 2023, then let’s hope that 2024 is a continuation of good things. As we inch towards the new year, it’s a good time to reflect and remember the past, but also a time to feel hope and wonder for the unwritten future. With that I wish you and yours a very happy and healthy new year…cheers!

1924

  • The first ever Winter Olympics was held. (Chamonix, France)
  • Harold Gray’s comic strip, Little Orphan Annie, debuted in the New York Daily News, and ran for 86 more years until 2010.
  • The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is held on November 27th, in New York City.
  • The technology company IBM (International Business Machines) was founded.
  • Born: Eva Marie Saint, actress AND Jimmy Carter, US President

1934

  • Pennsylvania opened its first liquor stores.
  • In July of 1934, Babe Ruth paid a fan $20 for the return of the baseball he hit for his 700th career home run.
  • The first Three Stooges short, Woman Haters, was released.
  • DC Comics was founded.
  • Born: Shirley Jones, actress AND Frankie Valli, pop singer

1944

  • Smokey Bear was created by the United States Forest Service. “Only you can prevent forest fires” became a popular quote of the year.
  • Scientists at Harvard University construct the first automatic, general-purpose digital computer.
  • The movie Casablanca wins the Academy Award for Best Picture.
  • IBM invents the first automatic digital calculator.
  • Born: Diana Ross, singer AND Danny DeVito, actor

1954

  • RCA produced the first color televisions for public use (price: $1000).
  • Philly-born pool player Willie Mosconi sunk 526 pool balls without missing in Springfield, Ohio. No one has come close to breaking that record.
  • Ann Hodges is the only verified person in history who was hit by a meteorite and survived. The Sylacauga meteorite fell on November 30, 1954.
  • I Love lucy was the #1 television show.
  • Born: Oprah Winfrey, TV show host AND Jerry Seinfeld, comedian, actor

1964

  • The Civil Rights Act was signed into law, outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
  • The Top Song was I Want To Hold Your Hand by The Beatles. On April 4, they held the Top Five positions on Billboard’s Hot 100, and seven other songs were also on the chart.
  • U.S. paper currency is made Legal Tender for all Debts, Public and Private. According to the U.S. Constitution, it must be backed by gold. It isn’t anymore.
  • The Ford Mustang was introduced.
  • Born: Courteney Cox, actor AND Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon

1974

  • Happy Days started an 11-year run on ABC.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers clinched the Stanley Cup!
  • The World Trade Center opened for business in New York City. It became the tallest building in the world at 110 stories.
  • The popular holiday gifts included Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Dungeons and Dragons, Magic 8 Ball, Spirograph, and Twister.
  • Born: Amy Adams, actor AND Leonardo DiCaprio, actor

1984

  • Apple Computer Inc. unveiled the Macintosh personal computer for $1,995, selling almost 250,000.
  • McDonald’s made their 50 billionth hamburger. McDonald’s also introduced the McDLT which kept the “cold side cold and the hot side hot”.
  • The hot movies that year were Gremlins, Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, 16 Candles, Footloose, Red Dawn, The Natural, Purple Rain, This is Spinal Tap, The Gods Must Be Crazy, and Amadeus
  • The first MTV Video Music Awards aired.
  • Born: Scarlett Johansson, actor AND LeBron James, basketball player

1994

  • The Friends TV sitcom premiered on NBC.
  • Jeff Bezos launched Amazon.com in Bellevue, Washington. The company originally opened for business as an online bookseller.
  • In 1994, one of the first Internet purchases took place in Santa Cruz, CA. A hungry web surfer ordered a pepperoni pizza with mushrooms and extra cheese from Pizza Hut.
  • PlayStation was released and Beanie Baby mania began.
  • Born: Halsey, pop singer AND Justin Bieber, pop singer

2004

  • Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook from a Harvard dorm room, and Google introduced the free email service Gmail.
  • Low-carb diets like “Atkins” and “South Beach” were all the rage.
  • Country music star Willie Nelson opened his own restaurant, “The Texas Roadhouse Grill,” in Austin, Texas.
  • Ken Jennings won 74 games and 2.5 Million dollars on Jeopardy! He still holds the record for longest winning streak and now is one of the hosts of Jeopardy.
  • Born: Millie Bobby Brown, actor AND Noah Schnapp, actor

2014

  • The movie The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 was released and was a huge hit.
  • Betty White was awarded the Guinness World Record for “Longest TV Career for an Entertainer (Female)”, with a 1939 debut.
  • Google became more valuable than Russia’s entire stock market in December 2014
  • The “Oscar Selfie” became the most retweeted photo of all time, with over 2.5 million shares. Captured in the photo are actors Jared Leto, Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Streep, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Cooper, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’O, Peter & host, Ellen DeGeneres.

I know that I missed some major events in this timeline, but I was only concentrating on positive or fun items.
