Thanksgiving is a day of family, food, and traditions. Some common traditions are watching the Thanksgiving Day parade and football, helping prepare the big meal, or fighting over the wishbone. In my own family, the entire house full of people take a brisk walk after dinner, only to then ravish the dessert table when we get back. Every family has their own holiday traditions, but here is a list of some of the stranger Thanksgiving traditions that take place across America.

The Turducken

When turkey isn’t enough, try a turducken! A deboned chicken is stuffed into a deboned duck which is then stuffed into a deboned turkey. Whoa.

PJs All Day

Sure, you’re no stranger to stretchy pants on Thanksgiving but how about an annual PJ-Turkey Day. There are some families across the US that make Thanksgiving Day one big pajama party. Now that is relaxation at its finest.

Turkey Pardoning

In 1988, George H.W. Bush instituted the turkey pardon as a national tradition. Since then, each President actively participates granting one lucky bird its freedom on the scariest day of the year (for a turkey). The turkey is then sent to live out its days at Mount Vernon.

The Turkey Toss

In Indianapolis, IN, people have started an annual tradition of dressing their turkeys (not live ones, don’t worry) in a baby onesie, lighting them on fire and throwing them across a football field to see whose turkey could fly further. This tradition was basically started by a bunch of dudes who wanted to see a flaming turkey streak through the night sky, and now, it’s an annual thing.

Frozen Turkey Bowling

While some families line up to play touch football in the backyard, many others will be honing their skills in a different sport — Frozen Turkey Bowling. At the University of Wisconsin, the most popular Thanksgiving tradition is hurling frozen, oiled-up turkeys down a grocery store aisle at a set of bowling pins. Strike!

Thanksgiving Pie Eating Contest

Broomfield, Colorado loves Thanksgiving so much that they host an annual pumpkin pie eating contest each year. Contestants have to finish a whole pie as fast as they can with their hands tied behind their backs.

The Wild Turkey 81 Eating World Championship

In 2011, Wild Turkey, the whiskey maker, began a turkey eating competition to promote their product. The event involves eating as much turkey as they can in a limited amount of time. Currently, Joey Chestnut holds the title, managing to gobble down 9lbs in just 10 minutes!

North Tech Pie-Throwing

At the North Technical High School in Florissant, Missouri, Thanksgiving marks an annual pie-throwing event where students get to launch pies at the faculty and administration.

The Turkey Trot

These popular events involve getting dressed up as a turkey and doing a 3- to 5-mile run, normally for charity. A great way to shed some excess calories before the great Thanksgiving feast!

Turkey = Crab

In San Francisco, the Thanksgiving turkey is substituted with a local favorite… crab! Thanksgiving normally marks the beginning of Dungeness crab season so there is no better way to celebrate than a seafood Thanksgiving feast.

Thanksgiving Day Pumpkin Smash

This Thanksgiving tradition is both weird and adorable. On Thanksgiving at the Santa Barbara Zoo in California, people are encouraged to come out and watch different animals interact with (smash, chew & claw) pumpkins.
