Hagen’s Haunted House in Boyertown
Looking for the perfect blend of a treat and a trick this Halloween? Look no further than 357 E 3rd Street in Boyertown. What appears as an ordinary home on the outside houses the area’s best walk-through haunted house inside. At Hagen’s Haunted House, once you step through the door, you enter a world filled with a labyrinth of animatronics, pop-out surprises, and live actors, all designed to provide you with a fun and frightful experience. The best part? It’s absolutely free, though donations are welcome.
But how did this seemingly ordinary neighborhood home transform into such a spooky attraction? Let’s find out!
Fifteen years ago, Keith and Kim Steffenhagen embarked on a mission to create a memorable Halloween experience for their son who wasn’t keen on traditional trick-or-treating. Their journey began with a single animatronic countess from Spirit Halloween, tucked away in a closet, providing a quick spook and a treat for neighborhood kids. They enjoyed it so much that it prompted them to transform an entire room the following year. As the years passed, what started as one room expanded into two, then three, until their haunted creation sprawled across the first floor, the basement, and even the entire backyard! You truly have to see it to believe it.
With the combined efforts of their son, daughter, family, and friends, the Steffenhagens’ home undergoes the transformation into a Halloween masterpiece each year. While most people are heading to the beach or hosting BBQs in July, Kim and Keith start creating their haunted house. Every year, they introduce new creepy pieces and effects, ensuring that the attraction remains fresh and different for their returning visitors.
The haunted house comes to life with the help of around fifteen to twenty actors who not only give a scare, but also keep guests moving through the haunt. Anticipating a large turnout, the Steffenhagens are prepared for at least a thousand visitors on Halloween night. For the first time, they have decided to open their doors on the Saturday before Halloween for a charity night. On this special evening, all the donations collected will be given to the non-profit organization Tyler’s Ride of Gilbertsville.
I had the opportunity to chat with Keith and Kim about their haunted house, and I must say, they are incredibly fun and pleasant, not scary at all. They enjoy doing this for the community and love seeing (or hearing) the reaction of the people walking through their creation. They truly do love it. And on a side note, Halloween is not the only holiday that they have an extravagant event for.
This Halloween (or Saturday), as you seek the perfect blend of thrill and fun, make 357 E 3rd Street a must-visit. Hagen’s Haunted House is a free frightful delight for all ages, from children to older adults. Trust me, you will love it!
