October – The Embassador of Fall

Can you smell the pumpkin spice? Are you and the kids getting excited for spooky stories of witches, ghouls, and goblins? Are you looking forward to the rolling hills transforming into vistas of bright yellow, orange, and red? This can only mean one thing; October is here! When people speak of the beauty of fall and enjoying the crisp outdoor air, October is the month were this all happens. I think it is fair to say that if you love autumn then you love October. So, let’s delve a little further into learning about the calendar’s ambassador to the fall season…

The name October stems from the Latin word octo, meaning “eight,” because it was the eighth month of the early Roman calendar. When the Romans converted to a twelve month calendar, the name October stuck despite the fact that it’s now the tenth month.

Zodiac Signs: Libra (September 23 – October 22) Libras are known to be calm and balanced with impeccable taste. Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Scorpios are known to be passionate and magnetic with a strong will.

Birthstone: Opal and Tourmaline

Flowers: Marigold and Cosmos

October’s full Moon, known as the Hunter’s Moon, arrives on Wednesday, October 20th. Like September’s Harvest Moon, the Hunter’s Moon is closely tied to the autumnal equinox.

Why do leaves change colors in October? Did you know that fall’s vivid colors are actually hidden underneath summer’s green? The main reason for the color change is not autumn’s chilly weather, but the lack of sunlight. The green color of leaves disappears when photosynthesis (from sunlight) slows down and the chlorophyll breaks down. Trees with a lot of direct sunlight will produce red leaves, while other trees may turn yellow, orange, or brown.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The goal is to increase awareness of the disease and stress the importance of mammograms as the best tool to screen for breast cancer, the second most common type of cancer among women.

Here are some notable days in the month of October:

October 1st: International Coffee Day

October 4th: Cinnamon Roll Day
