Boyertown’s Oktoberfest 2023!

It’s September and you know what the means…it’s time for umm… Oktoberfest? Yeah, I know that’s a little confusing, but let me explain.

The original fest was the celebration of a Bavarian royal wedding that took place on the evening of October 12, 1810. The celebration continued throughout Bavaria for five more days. It all went so well that the Bavarian royal family decided to hold another party the very next year, thus beginning the Oktoberfest tradition. As years went on, the festival was prolonged and moved forward into September. By moving the festivities up, it allowed for better weather conditions. With warmer September nights, visitors were able to enjoy the gardens and outdoor festivities much longer. Today, Oktoberfest takes place on a 104-acre area in Munich, Germany, and attracts over six million visitors each year. It is a 16-to-18-day event that begins in September and ends on the first Sunday in October.

There you have it. That is the origin story of Oktoberfest in a nutshell.

As for Boyertown’s Oktoberfest, it will take place this Friday, Sept 15th and Saturday, Sept. 16th. It began sixteen years ago as a fun fall community event and fundraiser for Building a Better Boyertown. Boyertown may not have a 104-acre garden like Munich does, but it does have a heck of a big parking lot in the center of town that is perfect for such a celebration. In that parking lot you will find live music, German dancers, vendors, food, games, contests, and of course beer & drink. It might not be as big as the one in Munich, but it will be big with fun! Come out Friday night and Saturday all day and celebrate like you’re German. Whether you are German or not, everyone is German during Oktoberfest. Prost!
