More Free Summer Fun!

This is an updated version of the previous article Free Family Summer Fun

Now that we are deep into the summer season, the family fun and vacations might be hitting the wallet & purse strings pretty hard. With plenty of summer left to go, you might be looking for ways to have fun without all the cost. Below is a list of free or inexpensive activities the whole family can enjoy. More summer fun, yay!

  • Go to a Park: There are always free parks nearby ready for you to stop by and enjoy for the afternoon. Whether you enjoy an afternoon at your local park, or you plan an adventure or historical learning trip at a National or State Park, it is one of the best free family-friendly options for a summer getaway. (Boyertown Community ParkEarl Township ParkMemorial ParkFrench Creek State ParkGreen Lane ParkValley Forge National Historical Park)
  • Make a Picnic: Make a couple of sandwiches and devil up some eggs. Then pack your picnic basket, grab a blanket and enjoy a lunch or dinner in your back yard or at a park. Everything tastes better outside.
  • Take a Hike: Parks, lakes and other nature areas often have marked hiking trails. They also usually designate the trail’s skill level and provide options for novice hikers as well as experienced ones. Make sure to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and don’t forget bug spray! Before you head out, check the park website for times, trail maps, and schedule changes. (French Creek State Park, Monocacy Hill, Nolde Forest)
  • Go on a Bike Ride: There are lots of great biking and walking trails in the area that are flat and easy for novice and expert bikers to enjoy. Not only is a family bike ride fun, but it’s good exercise too! Don’t forget your helmet. (Perkiomen Trail, Schuylkill River Trail)
  • Go to a Playground: Play areas, swings, and slides are great places for kids to run and play. Call a friend and set up a play date. You can pack a lunch and make it a picnic trip too!
  • Set Up Camp: Take the family on an overnight or weekend outdoor adventure! If you would rather something more low key, try pitching a tent in the backyard. You experience the fun of camping, but the luxury of indoor plumbing. Don’t forget to do some star gazing!
  • Outdoor Movie: Many towns and cities have free summer outdoor movies. Bring a blanket and get there early to claim your spot! (Sate Theatre of Boyertown is offering kids movies every Wednesday & Thursday thru July for only $1)
  • Summer Concert: Free outdoor summer concerts are fun for young and old.. Check out the schedule of events in this weekly event guide below. (Union Jack’s Inn on the Manatawny in Boyertown has a free music on the lawn every Sunday. It’s a blast!)
  • Storytime: You can always grab a blanket or pull up a lawn chair to enjoy a good story outdoors. (Frecon Farms has “Storytime in the Orchard” every Friday at 10am throughout the summer)
  • Visit a Farmer’s Market: You can spend your time people-watching or “window shopping” while enjoying some local culture and trying out the free samples. Some markets have live entertainment, too. (Every first & third Thursday is the Boyertown Farmers Market in the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles parking lot)
  • Go to your Public library: The public library has a wealth of free books, movies, music and games for you and your family to enjoy. They also offer many free events for all ages. (Boyertown Community Library)
  • Tour Your Local Fire Station: Many fire stations offer free tours to local residents. Get a group together for some educational fun and be sure to call ahead!
  • Family Cooking Project: Make these family meals even more special by inviting kids to help cook. Whether you’re making cool, sweet treats like Popsicles or passing down your secret spaghetti sauce recipe, you’ll be making both food and memories in the kitchen.
  • Start a Family Book Club or Movie Night: Choose a family-friendly book for everyone to read and discuss together or let everyone take a turn each week picking a free movie from the library or on your streaming service.
  • Family Game Night: Family game nights are great ways to spend time together without spending money.
  • Have a Yes Day: Parents can create magic for their children by simply agreeing to say yes to every request for one full day. Yes, you can eat ice cream for breakfast. Yes, you can have another hour of screen time. Parents might want to set some ground rules, of course, but a Yes Day for anything that doesn’t cost money just might become the most memorable day of the year!
  • Family Sports Day: Play parents-vs-kids basketball, show your kids how to play HORSE, set up an obstacle course, or make a yard games Olympics. The options are endless for a fun filled day of friendly competition. (Find backyard game ideas in the previous article DIY Backyard Games)
  • Set Up a Scavenger Hunt: Scavenger Hunts encourage curiosity and observation skills. The best part? They can even be planned indoors as a rainy day activity, too.
  • Have a Yard Sale: A classic summer activity that combines decluttering with earning cash. The whole family can take part in gathering, setting up, selling, and tearing down. The best part, you can offer a family fun outing from the earnings.
  • Free Community Events: Subscribe to this FREE event blog to see all the events that are happening in your community each week. Many of them are free!
