Spring Has Sprung!

Spring: a time or season of growth or development.

Ahh…the long awaited season of rebirth is here. On March 20th at 5:24pm spring officially began. Although there is no switch that turns winter off and spring on, you can already notice the changes surrounding us. The birds are in a flutter, preparing to bring new life. The fresh blooms are painting our landscape with bright colors. And the sun is bringing us a little more daylight each day. Soon we will find ourselves venturing out of our winter caves and rejoicing in the warmth of the outdoors. This transition fills people with a sense of a new and fresh optimism. That is probably one of the many reasons that spring is the highest favored season by Americans. Let’s learn a little more about this beloved season as we celebrate the coming of renewed life.

Spring begins on the Vernal Equinox – The word Vernal means spring in Latin while Equinox is the Latin word for equal days. On the first day of spring the Sun is exactly above the Equator and the hours of daylight and night are almost equal, with daylight being slightly longer.

Spring brings longer days –  During spring the northern half of Earth tilts toward the sun which causes the length of daylight to increase.

Spring brings warmer weather – As the Earth angles toward the Sun, the light does not spread out as much, thus increasing the amount of energy hitting any given spot. Also, the long daylight hours allow the Earth plenty of time to reach warm temperatures. (Fun fact: The Earth is actually furthest from the Sun in July and closest in January.)

Spring flowers grow faster and bloom – Plants respond to temperature and light. Increased temperatures as well as day length have a major influence on the growth and flowering of many plant species.

Animals have babies in spring – For most animals spring is the time when their newborns have the best chance of survival due to mild weather and food abundance. This also allows their babies time to mature physically before winter.

Birds learn to sing in spring – Songbirds learn to sing by hearing their species’ song when they are young. During the first stage of learning they babble, much like human infants do.
