Here is what’s going down during the week of 3/2/2023 – 3/8/2023

The Shop Small Initiative

It all starts with an idea. Sometimes that idea flourishes into something much more. That is how this event guide/blog got started.

Let’s go back to a time not so long ago. It was March 19th 2020. I think you know where I’m going with this. All “nonessential businesses” were ordered to close temporarily due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The closures included restaurants, clothing stores, hair salons, etc., including my real estate business.

It was just a few months prior to the Covid shutdown and my friend, Keith, was opening a new restaurant in Boyertown called Grind. He had been renovating the building for about a year and I was excited to see him finally open his doors to the public. Operating with a limited staff and limited menu for a few months, he was gearing up for a full grand opening. I was having conversations with him about how we could promote the grand opening together. Unfortunately, before those plans could take hold, Covid decided to take hold instead.

That brings me to the day our lives got flipped upside down, when the world shut down. What a weird time that was. As the days went by, I started thinking about the local shop owners who were not able to run their usual businesses but were still paying their usual bills. That really made me think about Keith, and how his restaurant hadn’t even fully opened yet, and now he had to deal with this. Not only did he worry about his new restaurant surviving during the shutdown, but his biggest concern was keeping his staff working. He quickly changed his business plan from an eat-in restaurant to a takeout and delivery restaurant. This was not the ideal situation, but it kept business going.

While I was home, not doing any business either, I thought about how I can help Keith spread the word about his restaurant. So, I decided to offer a weekly giveaway for a gift card to Grind Restaurant. This might help advertise Keith’s restaurant as well as promote my real estate business too. Win-win! So that is what I did. I went on Facebook Live each week picking winners for Grind gift cards until the shutdown was lifted.

After the shops and restaurants were able to slowly reopen, I shifted my thoughts to all small businesses. They were having a tough time bringing back customers. There were people who wanted to get back out into the world but weren’t sure if the shops were open.  People also wanted to find where events were taking place, including my family and I. There was no easy way to find this information for the Boyertown area. I saw a gap that needed to be filled. An event guide would help the public see their options for venturing back out into the world and help the local businesses bring people to their events. That is when “What’s Going Down in Boyertown?” was born.

Now almost three years later, this Boyertown Area event guide is still going strong. The small businesses that survived the pandemic are full steam ahead, and now there are more and more events happening each week!

Wanting to help a friend through a struggle, is how this all began. The truth is, small businesses always have their struggles. Whether it’s a slow time of the year, trouble finding employees, unexpected issues, or just having to work endless hours, small businesses, including my own, could always use an extra hand.

That brings me to my newest cross promotional idea for local businesses. I am going back to a weekly giveaway to shine a light on small businesses in the area. A different local business will be highlighted on my Facebook page each week (Jeff Frederick with Glocker Realty). Anyone who shares and likes the “Shop Small Giveaway” post will be automatically entered to win the said prize or prizes from that business. The prize winner(s) will be drawn live on my page at the end of each week.

Like I said at the beginning “It all starts with an idea.” Where it goes from there…who knows?
