Here is what’s going down during the week of 2/2/2023 – 2/8/2023
February…
February (in Latin, februa) means “to cleanse.” The Roman calendar month of Februarius was named for Februalia, a festival of purification and atonement that took place during this period.
Zodiac Signs: Aquarius (January 20–February 19) and Pisces (February 20–March 20)
Birthstone: Amethyst
Flowers: Violet and Primrose
How do you feel about the month of February? Snow lovers are hoping that it will finally bring some measurable snow. Others can’t wait to get through it and move onto warmer months. Well, there is good news for both, February is historically the snowiest month of the year, and it is the shortest month of the year with only 28 or 29 days (29 days on leap years).
Whether you love February or not, you will always find love smack dab in the middle of the month. February 14th brings us the Valentine’s Day traditions that have been celebrated since 1400, when King Charles VI of France established the High Court of Love. Cupid has been working hard for many years!
Those of you not using spell check, “Listen up!” February is one of the most misspelled words in the English language. Remember, there is a “silent r” after the b. Also, remember that it is silent when spoken.
Now that you know a little more about the fridged and fervid February, here are some notable days that you will find this month…
- Black History Month (2/1-2/28) – A time to celebrate African American people’s achievements and to recognize their roles in American history.
- Groundhog Day (2/2) – This is the day that Punxsutawney Phil (a groundhog) predicts six more weeks of winter or an early spring. It all hinges on whether or not he sees his shadow. This year Phil predicted six more weeks of winter.
- National Pizza Day (2/9) – Celebrate this Italian delight by making your own or ordering from your favorite pizza restaurant. Either way, it’s a good excuse to eat a delicious pizza!
- Super Bowl Sunday (2/12) – Also known as the Big Game is the final game of the National Football League. This year’s match up is Kansas City Chiefs vs Philadelphia Eagles. Rihanna will be performing the halftime show. Go Birds!
- Valentine’s Day (2/14) – A day to celebrate all things love. Traditionally this includes couples exchanging gifts, going on special dates, and romance.
- Random Acts of Kindness Day (2/17) – This day encourages people to do good deeds and celebrate the pay-it-forward mentality. It also reminds us that doing something kind for someone else can have a big impact not only on their day, but also on ours.
- Presidents’ Day (2/20) – President’s Day was established as a federal holiday in 1885 to celebrate George Washington’s birthday.
- Mardi Gras (2/21) – Also known as Fat Tuesday, this is a celebration dedicate this day to binging on rich foods and alcohol before giving them up for the 40 days of fasting before Easter. America’s largest Mardi Gras celebration is in New Orleans, Louisiana.
- Ash Wednesday (2/22) – Ash Wednesday is a religious holiday that begins the forty days of Lent period.
