Home Trends for 2023

With every new year comes all kinds of predictions for the year ahead. Since my profession is real estate, I find the home trend predictions the most interesting. From interior design to home sale forecasting, it’s all an integral part of my business. As I scoured the internet for this years home trends, I gathered the items that I felt were true, interesting, or intriguing, and put them together in this week’s blog. This might give you an idea for an upcoming renovation or a way to freshen up your home for the new year. Let’s see what home trends might be headed our way 2023…

Home Interior Trends for 2023

Moody Lighting – Forget bright, ceiling task lighting. A popular trend is LED strip lighting along ceiling edges and walls or underneath cabinets. Sconces and table lamps also provide softer light. Also, smart lighting allows for different hues to fit your mood.

Retro Touches – Vintage and eclectic collages will be used in more home interiors. Also, trend forecasters have long predicted that this decade might mirror the original Roaring 20s, and now we are starting to see it. Art Deco will be a hot trend over the coming year.

The Slab Backsplash – Traditional white subway tile is being replaced in favor of sleek, large-scale slab backsplashes. A slab backsplash is simply a backsplash made of one large piece of continuous material. Granite, quartz, and marble are popular choices for this. It can be matched to the countertops, or used as a statement piece in the kitchen with a bold contrasting color or design.

Bold & Unexpected Colors – Move over subtle neutrals and tones of gray, 2023 is kicking up the energy. Over the past year there has been an influx of neon and bright colors in fashion and interior design. These vibrant and bold colors work well in a wide array of settings, from traditional to modern. So try adding some bright and energetic colors in your home this year.

Home Tech Trends in 2023

Smart Lighting – With millions of colors available in one smart bulb and endless settings possible through an app, illuminating a home has become more customizable, and exciting, than ever before. With the addition of smart switches and smart bulbs, you can adjust the lighting in your home, anytime or anywhere, with just one command.

Smart Kitchen Gadgets – Of all the places in the home that can benefit from smart home tech, the kitchen has to be the biggest. Smart kitchen appliances are now finally becoming more varied and affordable. 2023 will bring a boom in things like smart kettles, smart air fryers, and even larger itemslike fridges and ovens.

Smart Sprinkler System – The “Smart Sprinkler System” offers greater control over your home’s irrigation, allowing you to set up and control different zones. Soil Sensors offer additional autonomy, as they automatically measure your soil’s moisture levels and communicate with the controller on optimal watering schedules.

Outdoor Living Trends of 2023

Indoor – Outdoor Merge – A seamless transition from the indoors to outdoors has been all the craze over the past few years. This includes opening up the home to the deck or patio through folding glass doors and adding enclosed verandas and covered outdoor kitchens. It also means choosing ultra-comfortable and luxe materials for outdoor furniture that feel more like indoor pieces.

Lit Garden & Landscape Sculptures – Wow guests with lit-up illuminated design features which appear as artwork throughout the landscape and back yards. These unique elements provide a focal point and transform the entire yard into an intriguing space. Use fixtures you have on hand to thoughtfully light up sculptures, statues, and sundials to create a conversation starter and enhance the mood of any outdoor environment.

Water Features – Whether it’s a simple fountain or an elaborate waterfall, the sound of running water is sure to create a relaxing atmosphere. If you’re starting an outdoor living space remodel, ask your contractor or custom home builder about incorporating a water feature into your design.

Housing Market Prediction for 2023

Predicting the housing market is like predicting the weather. There are many unpredictable factors to consider, so you have to take the knowledge of the present market and make your best guess of which direction those factors will take us over the next year. Here is what I am seeing trending for this year…

Inventory will remain low.
Home values will show some decline, but nothing drastic.
Mortgage rates will probably raise a little higher, but with a decline by the end of the year.
Due to higher mortgage rates, buyer demand will be a little lower or their purchase power will lessen.
I expect to see a more even market by the end of the year. Neither sellers nor buyers will have the power.

That is my prediction of the housing market for 2023. Now remember, I don’t have a crystal ball (I wish I did), so unpredictable factors could send things into a different direction, but if things stay on course, this is what I expect for this year.
