Try Something New for the New Year

It’s the first week, of the first month, of the new year. No need to make a new year’s resolution that you won’t keep. Try starting off 2023 with a bang, by doing something that you never did before. It doesn’t have to be anything big like sky diving or breaking a Guinness world record. You can just think of something out of your norm, and give it a shot. This act, no matter how small, will give you an instant sense of accomplishment and it will start the new year off in the right direction. Who knows, you might find yourself trying all kinds of new things? Maybe it will become your new year tradition? Here is a list of ideas that can help you on your journey to your first for the new year…

Take a Cooking Class – Is toasting a Pop-Tart your idea of cooking? Well, maybe it’s time to take a cooking class to see what kind of chef is inside of you. You might just find you enjoy the art of food creations.

Learn to Play an Instrument -Music is medicine for the soul. Learning to play an instrument isn’t easy, but it sure can be rewarding. Not sure where to begin? Stop by Funky Frets in Boyertown and I’m sure they can help.

Host a Party – Whether you call on your friends for a game night or you quarterback a Super Bowl party, if you have never been the host with the most, now is the time. You can find all kinds of party ideas online. You and your guests will have a great time!

Do the Polar Bear Plunge – This is a winter event where you submerge your entire body into a chilling water. Sometimes these events take place to raise money for a charitable organization, but sometimes it’s just for “fun”. So, be brave, strip down to your skivvies, and jump into freezing cold water for a good cause.

Try Knitting or Crochet – You can run down to your local arts & crafts store and get everything you need at a low cost. Follow an instructional how-to video online and make yourself a nice winter scarf. Not only will you have learned a new craft, but your scarf will keep you warm for the rest of the winter season.

Attend a Hockey Game – Spend an afternoon surrounded by screaming fans, watching hockey players swoosh by, in an action pack game. The Santander Arena is close by and the Reading Royals tickets are fairly cheap too.

Try on Ice Skates – Frozen ponds or lakes can provide a scenic outdoor experience, while taking in the fresh crisp air, as you glide along the ice. Make sure the ice is at least four inches thick before you walk out on it. If you can’t find a frozen pond or lake, you can find local outdoor ice-skating rinks at Green Lane Park and Spring Mountain Ski Area.

Do a Random Act of Kindness – Random acts of kindness are some of the most fulfilling and most humane and human things you could ever do. Especially when it is done for a complete stranger.

Drive a Snowmobile – Driving a snowmobile is an exciting and scenic way to spruce up your winter. The Pocono Mountains have plenty of snowmobiling options for your “need for speed”.

Learn to Snowboard or Ski – Have you ever thought that you would like to try snowboarding or skiing, but just never got around to it? Well, this is your year. Find a snow loving friend that can teach you, or sign up for a class at your local mountain (Bear Creek Mountain or Spring Mountain Ski Area). Don’t forget to treat yourself to a hot cocoa or an adult beverage in the lodge afterwards.

Bake Bread from Scratch – There’s nothing like the taste of fresh baked bread! If this is something you never done, give it a whirl. Your nose, tummy, and whoever you share it with will thank you.

Go Ice Fishing – Bundle up and spend a winter’s afternoon fishing. Make sure you do some research to make sure you have all the right tools. Most importantly, make sure the ice is thick enough to hold you.

Volunteer for a Local Organization or at a Local Hospital – There is nothing better than giving back to society. Not only are you helping others, but it is sure to make you feel good too.

Go Snow Tubing – Who doesn’t love sliding down a mountain with the wind nipping at your face? This is a winter activity that is fun for the whole family. You don’t need any training or equipment, just visit your local ski resort (Bear Creek Mountain) and have fun!

Take a Class – Is there something you’ve always been interested in, but never made the time to pursue? There are all type of in-person and online classes to choose from. Whatever your interest, there is no time like the present to do it. You can often find a variety of classes in the events list below.

Learn a New Language – Pick a language that you would like to speak or understand. Then find a class, or online study guide, to help you learn it. Once you have the basics down (this is the best part) go on a trip to where the language is spoken and try it out. Now that is a great reward for your hard work.

Try a New Sport – There are many sports available for all ages to play. Like Nike says, “Just do it”. One option, that is all the rage these days, is pickleball. It’s a year round sport that you can play indoors at the Boyertown YMCA or outdoors at the Boyertown Community Park. Of course, there are health benefits to playing a sport too!

Take Dancing Lessons – Do you have two left feet? This is the perfect time to step into a pair of dance shoes. There are many dance options to choices from; tango, two-step, swing, etc. Just think, the next time you hit the dance floor, you will have everyone looking at you for the right reason. You can find dancing classes in the events list below.
