Welcome 2023!

Are you ready to ring in the new year? Ready or not here it comes! If you were not a fan of 2022, just think of the new year as a refresh button. If you had the best year of your life in 2022, then let’s hope that 2023 is a continuation of good things. As we inch towards the new year, it’s a good time to reflect and remember the past, but also a time to feel hope and wonder for the unwritten future. With that I wish you and yours a very happy and healthy new year…cheers!

1923

  • The first Issue of Time Magazine was published – It featured former US Speaker of the House Joseph G. Cannon on the cover.
  • The Warner Brothers established their film studio company.
  • Yankee Stadium – ‘The House That Babe Ruth Built’ was opened.
  • Roy and Walt Disney founded The Walt Disney Company.
  • Born: Estelle Getty, actress, comedian AND Bob Barker, gameshow host, actor.

1933

  • Repeal of Prohibition in the United States. This making alcoholic beverages legal again for the first time in 13 years. Cheers!
  • Construction of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge began. (completed in 1937).
  • The first drive-in movie theater is opened. Located in Camden, New Jersey.
  • King Kong became the first Sci-Fi blockbuster movie.
  • Born: Carol Burnett, actress, comedian, singer, writer AND Willie Nelson, country singer, musician, songwriter, actor.

1943

  • Nachos were invented and were originally called “Nacho’s Especiales”. Named after the man who invented them: Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya.
  • The Pentagon building is completed (the world’s largest office building).
  • Chutes and Ladders is the most popular Christmas gift.
  • Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! Opens and runs for 2,212 performances until its initial end in 1948.
  • Born: Joni Mitchell, singer, songwriter, painter AND Robert De Niro, actor, film producer

1953

  • The first issue of TV Guide magazine hits the newsstands. (I love Lucy was the #1 show on tv).
  • Mauch Chunk, PA is renamed “Jim Thorpe” in honor of the athlete and Olympic gold medalist.
  • The first Matchbox Cars were introduced.
  • The first color television went on sale for about $1,175.
  • Born: Cyndi Lauper, singer, songwriter, actress AND Tim Allen, comedian, actor

1963

  • Kodak introduced the Instamatic camera.
  • The last day of shooting the Gilligan’s Island pilot was the day JFK was assassinated. This was commemorated in the opening credits as the S.S. Minnow is seen leaving the harbor with an American flag at half mast.
  • Elizabeth Taylor was the first actress to earn $1,000,000 for a single film – Cleopatra.
  • The first publicly available push-button telephone was released by the Bell System.
  • Born: Lisa Kudrow, actor, producer, screenwriter AND Michael Jordan, pro basketball player (g.o.a.t.), actor

1973

  • Federal Express (FedEx) began operating.
  • The first cell phone call was made by Martin Cooper of Motorola to his direct research rival Joel Engel of Bell Labs.
  • The top grossing movie of the year was The Exorcist.
  • The minimum wage was $1.60 per hour. The average household income was $12,900. The average home price was $32,500.
  • Born: Kristen Wiig, comedian, actor, writer, producer AND Neil Patrick Harris, actor, singer, writer, producer, television host

1983

  • The series finale of M*A*S*H was watched by 125 million people, making it the most watched finale of all time, still to this day.
  • Sally K. Ride, 32, becomes the first US woman astronaut in space as a crew member aboard space shuttle Challenger.
  • Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi was #1 at the box office.
  • McDonald’s introduced chicken McNuggets, and the bite-size chicken pieces soon became a global phenomenon.
  • Born: Carrie Underwood, singer, songwriter AND Chris Hemsworth, actor, producer

1993

  • The US Post Office issued the first stamp honoring Elvis Presley. Collectors mailed letters with bad addresses just to have them marked “Return to Sender” (the name of an Elvis song).
  • Whitney Houston’s, I Will Always Love You, was the #1 song of the year.
  • Residents from Derry, Pennsylvania make the world’s largest peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It was 40 ft long and consisted of 150 pounds of peanut butter and 50 pounds of jelly. The record has since been broken.
  • Beanie Babies were first introduced at the World Tot Fair in New York City.
  • Born: Ariana Grande, singer, songwriter, actor AND Chance the Rapper, rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer

2003

  • Apple launched iTunes and sold one million songs during the first week.
  • Basketball legend Michael Jordan retired. He played for the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards for 15 seasons
  • Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Song, Best Visual Effects, and Best Costume Design.
  • Tesla Motors, an American company that designs and manufactures electric cars, was founded.
  • Born: Olivia Rodrigo, singer, songwriter, actor AND Robert Clarence Irwin, television personality, wildlife photographer, conservationist

2013

  • Sony launched the Playstation Four and sold over one million units on the first day.
  • The movie Frozen was released on Nov 27th and became the highest grossing movie of the year.
  • PayPal mistakenly credited $92 quadrillion ($92,233,720,368,547,800) to a Pennsylvania PR executive Chris Reynolds. That made him the richest man in the world…for a moment.
  • In 2013, “super-sweet” meant awesome, “soft” referred to someone who was afraid to do something, and “cray cray” was another word for crazy.
  • Born: North West, daughter of Kim Kardashian & Kanye West AND Prince George,  son of Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton

I know that I missed some major events in this timeline, but I was only concentrating on positive or fun items.
