Here is what’s going down during the week of 11/10/2022 – 11/16/2022
The Mighty Atom!
Can you bend a steel bar with your bare hands? How about bite a nail in half with your teeth? Maybe pull a truck with your hair? I’m guessing you probably can’t do any of these things. Neither can I, but The Mighty Atom sure could. These were not tricks; they were feats of strength that were beyond human. You would think a person that could do such things was born with superhuman physical capabilities, but The Mighty Atom was quite the opposite. He was born premature and sickly. He grew to a small stature of only five foot four inches. Though he was not built to be a strongman, with pure will, dedication, and determination, he overcame his shortcomings and became a man of mind-boggling mental and physical capabilities.
The story of The Mighty Atom (Joe Greenstein) is not only inspirational but also fascinating. Born in Poland in 1893, he overcame his health odds and trained to become a strongman performer. Once he honed his technique and performance, he brought his feats of Strength to America. Living in New York City and performing his incredible acts, he soon gained national and worldwide notoriety. He eventually brought his talents to Zerns in Gilbertsville on the weekends, where he would put on a show and sell products out of his truck. But there is much more to the story than that…
If you would like to hear the full story and even see his infamous 1938 truck, then make sure you purchase a ticket for the screening of “the Mighty Atom” at the State Theatre this Sunday at 4pm. The Boyertown Historical Society, Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, and the State Theatre have all teamed together to bring you this special presentation. Tickets are $25 and include entrance to the movie, a booklet about The Mighty Atom, and a private reception at The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles. At the reception you can see The Mighty Atom’s truck and some of his performance items, and you can meet one of his proteges, the Irish Anvil, while enjoying some light fare.
