CARNIVALS, MUSIC, and FIRWORKS! – Summer might be coming to a close, but Labor Day weekend brings all of the summer fun back for one last hurrah before we begin our shopping spree of pumpkin spice coffee, pumpkin beers, and pumpkins. Here are a few exciting events this holiday weekend…

If you’re looking for some family fun, there are two big carnivals happening this weekend. Can you smell the funnel cake and cotton candy? Do you hear the sounds of the rides spinning and kids screaming with joy? How about the call of the carny at the ring toss to “step right up and win the giant stuffy”? You can find all of this throughot the weekend at the Fun Zone’s Labor Day Weekend Funfest in Douglassville or at The Norco Carnival in Pottstown. See the days and times on the events list below. (Pictured is the Fun Zones’s 85 foot giant ferris wheel.)

Pack up the car with family and friends for a drive-in style concert! Frog Holler, a must see local favorite, will be performing live at Bear Creek Mountain Resort this Sunday at 6pm. After the show you can stay for the fireworks at 10 PM. The price is $40 per car for the concert and fireworks. (See all of the other live music this weekend in the events list below.)

Are you looking for a big fireworks display this weekend? You are in luck! The Fun Zone Carnival is putting on its Grand Firework Show this Sunday at 9:30pm. Free parking is available. Also, Bear Creek Mountain Resort will have their display at 10pm on Sunday. There is a fee of $10 per car, but it garantees you a a great view!

LABOR DAY? – Summer’s final fling has arrived. Although there are 21 calendar days left before fall begins, most people consider Labor Day the unofficial end to summer. So…what, how, when, why is Labor Day? Let’s find out!

What is the meaning of Labor day? Do you get weekends off from work? Lunch breaks? Paid vacation? An eight-hour work day? Social security? If you said “yes” to any of these questions, you can thank labor unions and the U.S. labor movement for it. Years of hard-fought battles resulted in many of the most basic benefits we enjoy at our jobs today . Labor Day holiday is one of these benefits. This holiday pays tribute to the achievements of the American workers and celebrates their contributions to our country.

How Did Labor Day Begin? The idea of a “working men’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, started in the late 1800’s at the height of the Industrial Revolution. The labor unions began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions, long workdays, and low pay rates. In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday on June 28, 1894. President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.

When is Labor Day? Labor Day always falls on the first Monday in September, which means anywhere from September 1st through the 7th. This year it falls on September 7 in the U.S. The majority of other countries celebrate their labor force on May 1.

Why are you not supposed to wear white after Labor Day? I always thought this was a weird unwritten policy in the fashion world and wondered how it started. Well, it turns out that the tradition goes back to the end of the Civil War, when society was ruled by the wealthy wives of “old-money” elites. As more “new-money” millionaires entered society, the jealous old regime invented some fashion rules that only those in the “in-crowd” would know. One of which was not wearing white after Labor Day. That tradition has since trickled down through fashion magazines and into mainstream culture. Today most fashion experts agree that there is no need to follow this elitist rule anymore.
