Get the Folk Out!

This weekend, on Old Pool Farm in Schwenksville, PA, marks the 60th Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival. This is a four-day music festival that celebrates a vast array of musical styles. Also, the longest continuously run outdoor music festival in North America. We have been lucky to have this musical gem in our own “back yard” since 1966.

It all started in 1958 when the non-profit organization by the name of the Philadelphia Folksong Society formed to “generate and further the growing enthusiasm in American folk heritage.” They decided to start a music festival that would “be a show piece for a broad spectrum of American folk music” and “bring some of the more obscure American musicians to city audiences.”

In September of 1962, the first Philadelphia Folk Festival took place at The Wilson Farm in Paoli, PA. It resided there for four years until it grew “to big” for the farm and area to handle. Being forced to find another location, the festival moved to Spring Mount Ski Area in 1966. Then it was held at Upper Salford Park between 1967 and 1970. Finally, in 1971, the PFF found its permanent home at Old Pool Farm in Schwenksville. And as they say, “the rest is history.”

Each year (except 2020 & 2021) The Philadelphia Folk Festival welcomes more than 35,000 attendees during the four days, including 7,000 campers. The PFF showcases contemporary and traditional artists that are both superstars and rising stars, in many types of musical styles, such as, World/Fusion, Celtic, Singer/Songwriter, Folk Rock, Blues, Country, Klezmer, Dance and more, on eight different stages. There are also many crafters and vendors on site, as well as a variety of foods and a beer/wine tent for you to enjoy.

This isn’t just an adult event, it’s a family affair too! Kids (and adults) of all ages can enjoy puppeteers, jugglers, storytellers, hands-on crafts and kid-oriented musicians. Also, children 0-4 are admitted for free and ages 5-17 can receive variable discounted tickets.

My parents brought me to my first Folk Fest when I was eight years old. I loved it! Now my kids get to experience it as well. That is one of the coolest things about this unique and immersive musical event. You will see many generations of families enjoying the same music and traditions together each year on this “old farm” in Schwenksville. The Philadelphia Folk Fest has been around for generations, and I expect and hope it is around for generations to come. If you have never been to the Folk Fest, I think you should give it a try. It just might bring your inner folk out.
