It’s All About August!

August… It is the 8th month of the year and the last full month of summer. With last-minute vacations and preparing for kids going back to school & college, it can be a busy month. Maybe we should stop for a minute and see what August is all about? I mean, what do we really know about it? I’m sure there are some interesting facts. Who knows? Maybe you will be on Jeopardy some day and there will be a category “Facts about August”. After reading this, you will sweep the whole category and win the game! So, here we go! Let’s dig in!

How did August get its name? – The month was named in honor of Augustus Caesar, the Roman emperor and adopted son of Julius Caesar. Eventually, Augustus was shortened to, August.

August is unlike the others – In a regular year, no other month starts on the same day of the week as August. But, in a leap year, February, will start on the same day of the week as August.

The strange days of August -There are many strange days celebrated in the month of August, but here are a few favorites.

August 3rd is National Watermelon Day. August 10th is National Lazy Day. August 16th is National Roller Coaster Day. And finally, August 28th is National Bow Tie Day!

It’s just the opposite – In the northern hemisphere, August is considered to be the last month of summer. In the southern hemisphere, it’s the opposite of course, so it’s the last of the winter months!

August is the month of weeds – In the days of the Anglo-Saxons, August was known as “Weod Monath” or Weed Month, because it was when weeds and plants grew the fastest.

Fun fact – Bamboo in August can be seen growing with the naked eye at up to two inches an hour!

Eat your veggies! – August is the month when most vegetables are ready to be harvested. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and peas are at their freshest and most bountiful in August.

Here’s a quick gardening tip. Anything that grows underground should not be harvested in August. It needs that warm August soil to grow larger.

Columbus set sail for the Americas – It was in October of 1492 when the explorer Christopher Columbus “discovered” the Americas when he landed near the Bahamas. But it was two months earlier on August 3rd, 1492, that the journey of Columbus and his 90 crewmen began as they set sail from Spain.

How could you have a picnic without it? – The first sandwich was made on August 6, 1762, when the Earl of Sandwich asked for a dish with meat between two pieces of bread. Legend has it that he ordered the meal in the middle of a gambling game and didn’t want to interrupt it.

Two Signs – If you were born in August, you reign under one of the two August stars: Leo and Virgo. Leos are considered as very proud people who display great leadership while Virgos are analytical, hardworking, kind, and loyal.

Famous Leos born in August – The 44th President, Barack Obama was born on August 4th. 7-time Super Bowl champion, Tom Brady, was born on August 3rd. The first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong was born on August 5th. The “Queen of Pop”, Madonna, was born on August 16th. Local basketball hero, Wilt Chamberlain, was born on August 21st.

Famous Virgos born in August – Another local basketball hero, Kobe Bryant, was born on August 23rd. Comedian/actor Melissa McCarthy was born on August 26 & comedian/actor Jack Black was born on August 28. The “King of Pop”, Michael Jackson, was born on August 29th. Business tycoon, Warren Buffet, was born on August 30th.
