Beat the Summer Heat!

The heat is on! We are in full summer swing now with the temperatures expected to stay in the 90’s for at least the next week. This is great if you are swimming in a pool, playing in the sprinkler, or relaxing in the air conditioning, but for those of you who must bear the heat or don’t have the luxury of climate control, you will have to find some way to beat the heat. I have gathered some of the best and creative ideas on the internet to stay cool. So, don’t let the summer sun wear you down, try some of these ways to keep your cool…

  • Dress for the heat – Wear lightweight, light colored, natural fabrics like cotton and linen, as these will help your skin breathe and let your sweat evaporate. Also, we sweat about a half a pint from our feet daily, so wear sandals or flip-flops to let your foot sweat evaporate.
  • Keeping cool at bedtime – Store your pillowcase or sheets in a plastic bag in the fridge during the day. Put them back on the bed at night. The fabric will stay cool when you’re trying to get to sleep.
  • Chill Beverages in a Snap! – Did you forget to put your bottle or canned beverages in the fridge? No problem, here is a hack to fix that. Wet a paper towel, wrap it around a can or bottle, and place it in the freezer. In 15 minutes or less, your drink will be chilled to perfection. How does this work? It is explained that the water on the towel evaporates, drawing heat from the bottle and making it cool faster.
  • Run a Fan with A/C On – Using a ceiling fan while running the air conditioner can double the cooling effect. The AC lowers the air temperature, and the fan circulates the cool air throughout the room. The boost in air circulation creates a wind chill that allows you to run the AC at a higher temperature while still keeping cool.
  • Break the ice – Set a bowl full of ice in front of a table fan. As the ice melts, the fan will blow cooler air toward you. Now you do have to be fairly close by to enjoy the benefits. Your best bet is to do this while you’re working at your desk, or place the fan-bowl combo near the stove on your kitchen counter while you’re cooking.
  • Close the curtains and shut the blinds – It’s tempting to let the summer sunshine in, but as much as 30 percent of unwanted heat comes in through windows. So, it pays to keep them covered.
  • Keep cool and minty – The menthol in peppermint tricks us into feeling cool, which you can use to your advantage on warm days. If you have fresh mint, add it to a nice cold drink. Another option is to brew some peppermint tea and pop it in the fridge; when it’s cool, you can put it in a bottle and spray yourself to cool down.
  • Get low – Hot air rises, so set up your bed as close to the ground as possible to beat the heat. If you are in a one-story home, haul the mattress down from a sleeping loft or high bed and put it on the floor. In a multi-floor house, sleep on the ground floor or in the cool basement.
  • Apply ice or a cold-water bottle to pulse points – Your body’s quick cool spots are the insides of your wrists, the back of your neck, behind your knees, and your temples. These are areas where your blood vessels are the closest to the surface of your skin. Apply some ice or a cold bottle there every so often for a quick cool down.
  • Get cold feet – Your feet are extremely sensitive to temperature, so dunking your feet in a small pan of cold water can help to cool your whole body down. This is particularly effective right before going to sleep.
  • Keep a wet towel and sunscreen in a cooler – When it’s time to reapply sunscreen, you can simultaneously cool yourself down when working to protect yourself from the sun. A wet towel or paper towel can also bring your body temperature down and can be reused throughout the day.
  • Drink water! – Most important of all is to stay hydrated on a hot day. Not only will water save you from dehydration, but your body will feel cooler too. If you don’t like drinking plain water, try adding cucumber, mint leaves, lemons, or lime to make the water more refreshing.
